1st Look - 84th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur Championship
Welcome the 1st Look Series for the 84th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur Championship. Oregon Junior Golf’s premier event will take place on June 23rd to 27th at Portland’s historic Waverley Country Club. Established in 1896, Waverley Country Club was the 2nd private golf club founded east of the Mississippi River, and played host the Blyth Tournament beginning in 1897, one of the United States oldest international matches. Waverley Country Club is a truly special place for golf, traditions, amateur championships and so much more. Oregon Junior that Waverley Country Club is hosting this year’s Championship. Waverley Country Club is an incredible setting with rich history and deep traditions.
Waverley Country Club hosted the 1st ever Oregon Amateur tournament in 1904 and has hosted a total of 24 Oregon Amateurs and 2 Oregon Junior Amateurs to date. In addition, there have been 6 United States Golf Association Championships at Waverley Country Club, most recently when Marcy Newton won the 2000 U.S. Women’s Amateur, and most notably when Tiger Woods won his 3rd straight U.S. Junior Amateur in 1993. Waverley Country Club is scheduled to graciously host the 2017 U.S. Senior Women’s Championship, continuing their streak of hosting a USGA in every decade since 1950.
The architect of Waverley Country Club was originally completed by Jack Moffat in 1898. H. Chandler Egan completed the secondary design in 1912. Recently, Gil Hanse completed an extensive restoration to bring the course back to the layout and playability from the years of its origin. Hanse based the major restoration changes on original photographs of the course from its early days. One of the main restoration changes was the removal of over 300 trees, which significantly opened course to the stunning views of the Willamette River from the majority of holes.
216 Oregon Juniors will compete in the 84th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur over 5 days of tournament play. The Championship is a traditional Stroke play to Match play format. The first day of competition is Stroke play, which then changes to Match play for the remaining tournament days with seeding determined during the Stroke play qualifying.
