1st Look - Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge
In this this week’s edition of 1st Look Series we are headed to Albany, OR, site of this year’s Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge! The event is named after Oregon Junior Golf Alumni and PGA Tour Winner, Peter Jacobsen, who is a native of Oregon and has generously given back to Oregon Junior Golf for many years. This event is also the location of the local Callaway Junior World Qualifier. The Callaway Junior World Golf Championship is the largest international junior event in the world and hosts nearly 1200 players from over 50 countries. Qualifiers from the event will travel to San Diego, California on July 15th-18th, where the Callaway World is hosted annually.
The 2014 Peter Jacobsen Challenge takes place on June 18th and 19th at Spring Hill Golf Club at Albany Golf & Events Center. This is the first year Spring Hill Golf Club has hosted the Peter Jacobsen Challenge, however, they did host a memorable round in last year’s Central Willamette Junior. Albany Golf and Events Center is extremely excited about the opportunity to host a prestigious Oregon Junior Golf Major, and had reached out to Oregon Junior Golf to extend their interest and desire to host a 2-day tournament.
Spring Hill Golf Club was constructed in 1959 and opened for play in 1960. Designed by Fred Federspiel (other notable designs: Marysville GC in Corvallis, Meadows at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, and Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, WA), Spring Hill’s layout has not changed significantly and plays nearly the same has it did back in its opening years. One of the signature holes on Spring Hill Golf Club is the scenic Par-3, 17th. Playing 163-yards from the back tees, #17 requires an accurate tee shot to avoid the lake that runs alongside the entire right side of the hole and has attractive bunkers placed to capture any balls left of the green. Known for its unique use of irrigation systems that keep conditions stable throughout both the winter and summer seasons, Spring Hills is a lush, pristine conditioned golf course that is enjoyable for all skill levels.
Players and their guests will also have the opportunity to attend a BBQ/Pool Party at Albany Golf & Events Center on Wednesday, June 18th from 4-8pm. There will be food, pool amenities, Cobra/Puma demo equipment, SNAG Golf equipment and more! If you are playing in the 2014 Peter Jacobsen Challenge, please RSVP to juniorgolf@oga.org to confirm your spot and if you will have any guests ($10 p/ Adult; Kids under 14 -$7).
We look forward to seeing all you juniors, parents and spectators on June 18th and 19th at the Peter Jacobsen Challenge! Play well Participants!
Our next edition of 1st Look will take place at the prestigious Waverely Country Club, site of this month’s 84th Oregon Junior Amateur!
