2016 Oregon Mid-Amateur Qualifier Advances 44 to Championship Proper
WOODBURN, ORE. - Despite weather delays, heavy rain and a hail storm, forty-four players advanced to this year's Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship after qualifying was held Saturday, June 18th at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore.
Over 130 players attempted to qualify for this year's championship, which will be held July 9-10 on the Ghost Creek Course at Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains, Ore.
Medaling in Saturday's qualifier was Cody Pinkston (Eugene, Ore.), who fired a 3-under par 69 to earn medalist honors by two shots. Pinkston birdied the first two holes and never looked back, shooting a 33 (-3) on the front nine and finishing with a solid even-par back nine. Pinkston totaled five birdies and just two bogies in his round.
Brian Sunker (Lake Oswego, Ore.) was the only other player to finish under par on Saturday, earning a second place finish after shooting 71 (-1). Five players tied for third place at even-par: Billy Anderson (Eugene, Ore.), David Berlant (Portland, Ore.), Daniel Cheremnov (Hubbard, Ore.), Mike Hare (Portland, Ore.) and Jeff Wright (Portland, Ore.).
After 18-hole play was completed, a playoff was needed for players who shot 78 (+6) to finalize the field. Seven players who had waited through the day ended up competing for the final five spots, with Chris Dukeminier (Portland, Ore.), Ladd McKittrick (Tigard, Ore.), Clint Melville (Portland, Ore.), Dustin Pokorny (Happy Valley, Ore.) and Chris Underwood (Damascus, Ore.) advancing to next month's championship proper. Earlier in the day, McKittrick had aced his tee shot on the par-3 17th hole - an 8-iron from 153 yards.
