2018 Oregon Mid-Amateur Qualifying Recap

WOODBURN, ORE. - Two qualifiers were held last week for the upcoming 35th Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship, taking place this weekend, May 5-6 at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City, Ore.

The qualifiers were held on Thursday, April 26 and Saturday, April 28, respectively. Both qualifiers were held at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore.

Thursday's qualifier featured 65 players competing for 21 spots in the Championship proper. Despite a gorgeous day on the golf course, the track played tough, with only two players finishing the 18-hole qualifier under-par. Shane Johnston (West Linn, Ore.) and Noah Yano (Happy Valley, Ore.) shared medalist honors at 1-under par. Nik Schuurmans (Vancouver, Wash.) shot an even-par 72 to claim third place.

Seven-over par (79) turned out to be the cut line, with 11 players shooting the magic number. Four players ultimately advanced to this weekend's Championship: Tyler Gabriel (Beaverton, Ore.), John Gill (Madras, Ore.), Terry Paresi (Oregon City, Ore.) and Maurisio Rayas (Tigard, Ore.).

In Saturday's qualifier, 71 players competed for 22 spots. Brian Sunker (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Jacob Varriano (Olympia, Wash.) tied for medalist honors, both firing impressive rounds of 69 (-3). Byron Patton (Tigard, Ore.) shot a 2-under par 70 to earn third place.

As with Thursday, there was a playoff to determine who would advance past the qualifier. Tied at 4-over par, three players (out of six) made it to this weekend's Mid-Amateur: Edward Lee (Portland, Ore.), Ryan Patterson (Portland, Ore.) and Joey Ziogas (Salem, Ore.).
