27th Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship Begins Saturday at Wildhorse Resort
PENDLETON, ORE. – Over 70 of the best mid-amateur golfers from Oregon and SW Washington are set to begin play at the 27th Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship, held August 15 & 16 at Wildhorse Resort in Pendleton, Ore.
OGA members that are 25 year of age and older are eligible to participate in the Oregon Mid-Am. Both the Men’s (Joel Johnson) and Women’s (Brie Stone) defending champions will be in Pendleton, hoping to take home another title.
Johnson (Portland, Ore.) highlights a strong Men’s Division field. Past champion Randy Mahar (Portland, Ore.), 2013, will be paired with Johnson on Saturday, while 2007 champion Scott Hval (Portland, Ore.) will be playing right behind. Justin Kadin (Corvallis, Ore.), who won the 2010 Oregon Public Links Championship held at Wildhorse Resort, will be vying for another win at the host course. He tied for fourth in last weekend’s Oregon Men’s Stroke Play Championship and was a quarterfinalist in the 2015 PNGA Amateur Championship. Also in the field is Bill Winter (Portland, Ore.), winner of the 2013 OGA Tournament of Champions; Matt Hartley (Vancouver, Wash.), who represented the OGA in the 2015 PNGA Cup; and Jim Dunlap (Beaverton, Ore.), who won the Master-40 Division at this year’s Men’s Stroke Play Championship.
On the Women’s side, Stone (Veneta, Ore.) will look to win an unprecedented sixth-consecutive Mid-Amateur title. Previously this summer, Stone lost in a playoff and earned second place at the Oregon Women’s Stroke Play Championship. She’ll be challenged by Kate Harper (Portland, Ore.), who finished fourth in this year’s OGA Tournament of Champions and Oregon Women’s Public Links Championship, and Lani Elston (Milwaukie, Ore.), winner of the 2015 PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.
Also in the Women’s field is Debbie Friede (Washougal, Wash.), winner of the 2012 Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur
Championship, as well as Leilani Norman (Eugene, Ore.), winner of the same event in 2013. Rosie Cook (Bend, Ore.), who represented the OGA at this year’s PNGA Cup, will also be competing.
Wildhorse Resort is located on the Umatilla Reservation, at the base of the beautiful and majestic Blue Mountains. The last time the course hosted an OGA Championship was in 2010, when the resort held the 13th Oregon Public Links Championship. Designed by John Steidel, Wildhorse will play at a yardage of 6,874 and a slope and rating of 73.7/136 for the men, and a yardage of 5,723 and a slope and rating of 73.7/132 for the women.
