Austin Spicer Qualifies for 2017 U.S. Amateur
SALEM, ORE. – Austin Spicer (Gresham, Ore.) earned the only qualifying spot for the 2017 U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday at the section qualifier held at Creekside Golf Club in Salem, Ore. on July 17th.
Spicer, who recently completed his senior year at Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Wash., attended Gresham High School, just outside of Portland. He claimed the one and only qualifying spot up for grabs on Monday to this year’s U.S. Amateur, which will be held August 14-20 at The Riviera Golf Club and Bel-Air Country Club, located in Pacific Palisades and Los Angeles, Calif., respectively.
During the 36-hole qualifier, Spicer fired a 1-over par 73 after the first 18 holes, which was two shots back of first-round leader Riley Elmes (Lake Oswego, Ore.). The second 18 saw Spicer fire a 3-under par 69, compiling three birdies and no bogies, finishing the 36-holes at 2-under par 142.
He finished three-shots clear of four players at 1-over par: Elmes, Calvin Green (Springfield, Ore.), Tanner Huddleston (Woodland, Wash.), and Ben Wanichek (Eugene, Ore.). In a playoff to determine alternate spots, Green earned the first alternate position, while Huddleston earned second alternate honors.
The OGA will run its second 2017 U.S. Amateur Qualifier on Monday, July 24th at Centennial Golf Club in Medford, Ore.
