Centennial Junior Championship Day 2 Recap

Medford, OR. – The first Major tournament of the 2014 Oregon Junior Golf season concluded on Sunday at the Centennial Junior Championship. On a day that began with crystal clear skies, smoke soon filled the Rogue Valley and all the views from the Centennial Golf Club, before the wind moved the smoke from the Bend, OR fire through the valley in the late afternoon.

The great scoring conditions were still present on Day 2, and the Juniors did not fail to take advantage of them. Following the record breaking 192 total birdies made in Round 1, Oregon Juniors made 194 on Sunday.

A major contributor to the birdie count, and the winner of the Boys Open Division was Cole Madey. Madey carded back-to-back 67s to finish the tournament at -10 and complete a victory of 7 strokes. Hunter Wescott shot 68 and Bryce Wortman carded a 71 to both end the tournament at -3.

Ellen Secor held on to her lead after Day 1 to win the Girls Open Division with a final score of 146, +2, followed by superb play from Daniele Giles (+3), Madison Odiorne (+7) and Sophia Schiavone (+7). Cole Chrisman (-5) won the Boys Division after shooting a Division best 69 on Sunday and the Caples brothers of Zack and Jaykob finished together in 2nd and 3rd place overall.

Kaiyn Hellwege, Hannah Stobie and Mindy Eason finished at the top of the Girls Division, and Samuel Pyon (-3), Jackson Kennon (-1) and Isaac Buerger (+4) took the top 3 spots in the Intermediate Boys Division. In the Intermediate Girls Division, Victoria Gailey, Summer Marshall and May Wang played some great golf to finish 1-2-3 in their Division. In the Pee Wee Division, Messiah Gilbert, Scotty Kennon, Zoe Newell and Baylee Hammericksen won their respective age groups.

Late in the afternoon, Bend’s Rachel Drgastin made a Back 9 roar when her 4-Hybrid took off from the 150-yard, 14th hole and followed a direct line toward the flag before bounding onto the green, hitting the flag and dropping into the cup. It was Rachel’s first Hole-in-One and left her speechless as she watched the ball disappear on the green. Rachel’s playing competitor, Taylor Hartley, celebrated excitedly as ball went in, which caught the attention of players and spectators on the nearby holes. Rachel received a round of applause after receiving a Hole-in-One framed display with her scorecard and ball from her amazing shot on the 14th hole.
