NORTH PLAINS, ORE. (JULY 9, 2016)­–Call it coincidence that the Scottish Open is being played the same weekend as the 28th Oregon Mid-Amateur Championship, but as the wind whistled across the Ghost Creek course, the similarities seemed uncanny. Players weaved in and out of the trees and the tall grass on Saturday, as the high rough and tucked pins made for a strategically demanding test for most of the field.

In the Men’s division, Phillip Bagdade and Robbie Ziegler lead the tournament after they were the only two players able to post even par 71s. Bagdade’s round featured an eagle, three birdies, and five bogeys, while Ziegler had four birdies, two bogeys, and a double bogey. Defending champion Justin Kadin will join Bagdade and Ziegler in the final group, after posting a 1-over par 72. Overall, ten players are within three shots of the lead heading into championship Sunday.

Brie Stone, a 5-time champion of the Oregon Mid-Amateur, started on hole ten and made three straightbirdies on holes 16, 17, and 18 to make the turn at 3-under par. Stone struggled on her second nine, making four bogeys and no birdies, but her front nine play was enough to give her a one shot lead after a 1-over par 72.  Right on her heels is Amanda Jacobs who turned in a 2-over par 73. Also in firing range are Rosie Cook, who posted a 3-over par 74, and Gretchen Johnson, who recorded a 4-over par 75. 

With rain on the forecast for Sunday and a herd of players in contention in both the Men’s and Women’s division, the 28th Oregon Mid-Amateur is shaping up to be a survival of the fittest. Tee times start at 1:00pm tomorrow, with the final Women’s group teeing off at 1:50pm and the final Men’s group teeing off at 3:20pm. Spectators are welcome to attend.
