Day One of 84th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur Championship Complete

The first day of the 84th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur came to a close on Monday evening at Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore.

Five divisions (Juniors, Girls, Boys, Intermediate Girls, Intermediate Boys) participated in 18-hole stroke play qualifying on Monday. The Juniors, Boys and Girls divisions will begin match play competition on Tuesday, while the Intermediate Girls and Intermediate Boys division will play one more day of stroke play qualifying. The Pee Wee Girls and Pee Wee Boys divisions will compete in 9-hole stroke play qualifying on Tuesday, as well, before beginning match play on Wednesday.

In the Junior division, Riley Elmes (Lake Oswego, Ore.) fired the low score of qualifying, finishing with a 2-under par 70. Elmes’ round included a 3-under par 33 on the back nine, where he made four birdies. Not far behind is Cole Madey (West Linn, Ore.), who shot a 1-under par 71 to finish in second place of Juniors qualifying. Brian Humphreys (Washougal, Wash.) finished in third place for qualifying after he shot an even par round of 72.

Leading the way in the Girls division is last week’s 105th Oregon Women’s Amateur champion, Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.). Stoll finished at even par for the day, and earned medalist honors qualifying one stroke over Kaitlin Collom (Klamath Falls, Ore.). Amanda Elich (West Linn, Ore.) and Sarah Lawrence (Duvall, Wash.) finished in a tie for third after both shooting 77 (+5).

Craig Ronne (Klamath Falls, Ore.) shot the only under par round of the day in the Boys division, earning medalist honors after firing a 1-under par round of 71. Ronne started strong, shooting 34 (-2) on the front nine. Jaiveer Singh (Clackamas, Ore.) finished in second place after qualifying, finishing with a 2-over par 74, and Ryan Feyrer (Lacey, Wash.) and Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, Wash.) ended in a tie for third, both ending up with rounds of 75 (+3).

Medalist Jackson Kennon (Bandon, Ore.) fired a 1-under par round 71 to lead the way in the Intermediate Boys division after Monday. Samuel Pyon (Happy Valley, Ore.) is in second place after shooting a 3-over par 75, while Jonathan Lu (Portland, Ore.) and Nate Stember (Portland, Ore.) are tied for third, both finishing with rounds of 78.

In the Intermediate Girls division, Victoria Gailey (Tigard, Ore.) shot a 13-over par 85 to lead the way after day one of qualifying. Summer Marshall (West Linn, Ore.) is in right behind Gailey after she shot an 86 on Monday.

The 84th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur Championship runs from June 23rd-27th, and is held at Waverley Country Club in Portland, Ore.
