First Round of Match Play Complete at Oregon Amateur Four-Ball

BLACK BUTTE RANCH, ORE. – The first day of match play at the 2nd Oregon Amateur Four-Ball contained lengthy matches, a few upsets, and a reduced field in the championship brackets at the Big Meadow Course at Black Butte Ranch.

All divisions played one match on Sunday, with the Open and Senior Men’s Divisions playing two matches on Monday. The Women’s field will play one match tomorrow. Each division also includes a drop flight, ensuring each side another match.

In the Open Division, the most exciting and thrilling match took place between the side of Richie Mikesell and Brett Wolvert (Bend/Wilsonville, Ore.) and Shane Johnston and Lance Gilmore (West Linn/Portland, Ore.). The Johnston/Gilmore team was 3-up through four holes, and took a 2-up lead going into the 15th hole. Mikesell/Wolvert birdied the 15th and 16th holes to even the match, and after 18 holes we were still tied.

The match ended up going an incredible 24 holes. On the 24th hole, playing on the par-4 6th, Mikesell got up-and-down for par out of a fairway bunker to send his side to the round-of-16.

The biggest upset in the Open Division, in terms of seeding, was the No. 25 seeded side Robbie Ziegler and Connor Rumpf (Portland/Sherwood, Ore.) defeating the No. 8 seed, Tony Kordosky and Andrew Fitch (Redmond/Portland, Ore.) 6&5. They’ll play defending champions Trevor Harding and Brent McKee (Portland, Ore.) in the round of 16, after they fought back from 3-down in their first-round match to advance 2&1.

The Women’s Division featured three easy wins for top seeds. The semifinals are now set for Monday, which will include the No.1 seeded side Kailin Downs and Amy Anderson (Oregon City/Bend, Ore.) against Debbie Friede and Katy Wright (Washougal/Camas, Wash.) the No. 4 seed. In the other semifinal, defending champions Amanda Jacobs and Gretchen Johnson (Portland, Ore.), the No. 2 seed, will face off against the No. 3 seed Leilani Norman and Ginny Burkey (Eugene, Ore.).

In the Senior Men’s Division, just one upset occurred on Sunday. The No. 11 seeded side, Tom Prevost and Ron Hop (McMinnville/Dayton, Ore.), beat the No. 6 seed, Greg Sollers and Charley Griswold (Sunriver/Bend, Ore.). Also of note was the defeat of the defending champions in the first round, Stein Swenson and Carey Watson (Bend, Ore.). They were beaten by Vernon Pelman and Duane Bray (Vancouver, Wash./Portland, Ore.), 2-up.
