Five Under-Par Rounds Highlight Day One of 72nd Tournament of Champions
AURORA, ORE. - Mother nature was very unpredictable throughout the 72nd Tournament of Champions, but that didn’t stop five total competitors from firing under-par rounds on Saturday. As expected, Langdon Farms Golf Club provided a great test while kicking off the 2016 OGA Championship season.
At the end of the first round, the club champion from Tualatin Country Club, Travis Johnsen (Wilsonville, Ore.), found himself with a one shot lead over Arthur Kim (Tigard, Ore. - Willamette Valley CC) and Tanner Huddleston (Woodland, Wash. - Lewis River GC) after firing a 2-under 69 to lead the Men’s Open Division.
In the Women’s Open Division, defending Oregon Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Kate Harper (Portland, Ore. - OGA Players Club) leads after day one in dominating fashion as she holds a six shot lead over Jenny Krause (Eugene, Ore. - Emerald Valley GC) and Brie Stone (Veneta, Ore. - Shadow Hills CC) after shooting an even-par 71.
The championship features its first ever senior division, welcoming 42 players into this weekend’s championship. Bill Winter (Portland, Ore. – Columbia Edgewater CC) welcomed the opportunity by finishing his round with a birdie to shoot a 2-under 69. Rounding out the top four scores were Jay Fredrickson (Hillsboro, Ore.) of Forest Hills GC (70), Tom Zupan (Portland, Ore.) of Portland GC (72), and Michael Kloenne (West Linn, Ore.) of Columbia Edgewater CC (72).
