Washougal, Wash. – After being rescheduled and then changing venues, the Oregon Net Championship was officially held at Orchard Hills Country Club and two champions were crowned October 12th. Mike Foister of Vancouver, Wash. won the Men’s Title and Eva Corbin of Salem, Ore. was crowned the Women’s Champion.

With a 21 handicap, Foister trailed defending champion Jann Halstead by two strokes after the first day. Improving by one stroke during the second round was enough to give him the win by three strokes. Foister finished the tournament with a two-day net total of 13-under par 64-63-127.

In the Women’s Division, everyone was chasing Addie Vandehey after the first round. As she fell back in the second round, it was Corbin who took a commanding lead after firing a net two over-par for a two-round total of net 13 over par 81-72-153. Corbin won by three strokes over former champion Cindy Anderson.

The purpose of Net competition is to level the playing field so that all players have an opportunity to win. Each player’s handicap index is converted into a course handicap which is deducted from their score to provide a Net score.

Entries in the Men’s Division were open to amateur golfers with USGA Handicap Indexes™ of 36.4 and less and the Women’s Division were open to female amateur golfers with USGA Handicap Indexes™ of 40.4 and less. All entrants must be members in good standing of an OGA Member Club. In this year's championship, player's handicap indexes ranged from a 2.2 to 31.

Both the Men's and Women's Divisions were divided into flights based on Handicap Index.  The Men's Division had three flights and the Women's Division had two flights giving each player a chance to vie for the overall championship as well as trophies and prizes within their flight.

In the Women's Division, Cindy Anderson of Eugene, Ore. captured top honors in Flight I with a net total of 16-overpar.  The first flight included players with handicap indexes of 7.6 to 14.1. Last year’s champion, Victoria Olheiser of Salem, Ore. won Flight II, which included players with handicap indexes of 16.0 to 32.3.

Among the Men, Scott Hefflinger of Vancouver, Wash. finished at a net 3-over par to win Men’s Flight I. This flight included players with handicap indexes ranging from a 0.7 to a 9.1. In the Men's Flight II, John Rose of Vancouver, Wash. earned the top spot with a 1-under par net total. Flight II included players with handicap indexes of 9.5-15.5. Flight III, which included players with handicaps of 15.6-29.2 saw Jann Halstead of Hood River, Ore. win with a net 10-underpar total.

A Handicap Index reflects only the potential ability of a player, not their average ability. The index is computed using only the lowest ten of the players last twenty scores and may also include the lowest two tournament scores posted in the last year should those tournament scores reflect exceptional tournament performance.  USGA Handicap Indexes are just one of the services provided to members of all OGA member clubs.
