Four Players Advance to U.S. Mid-Am Championship

PORTLAND, ORE. (AUGUST 3, 2016)–Sixty-three players teed it up at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier at Columbia Edgewater Country Club with hopes of earning one of four available qualifying spots for the national tournament. The course did not play incredibly long at 6,742 yards, but players found it difficult to score on a relatively mild-weathered August day.

Sean Fitzpatrick (Port Orchard, Wash.) balanced four birdies with four bogeys to earn medalist honors with an even-par 71. Matthew Jacobsen (Portland, Ore.), Matt Hartley (Vancouver, Wash.), John Kollus (San Diego, Calif.), and Chris Dukeminier (Portland, Ore.) tied for second at one-over par 72, prompting a four-man playoff for the remaining three qualifying spots. Dukeminier, Hartley, and Jacobsen survived the playoff to claim the final three spots. Kollus, the odd man out after the playoff, earned the first alternate position. Five players were two shots back after shooting two-over 73s, creating another playoff scenario for the second alternate position. Jay Poletiek (Portland, Ore.) emerged from the other four players to claim second alternate.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur will take place September 10-15 at Stonewall Links in Elverson, Pa. Players will play two 18 hole rounds of stroke play, with the top 64 players making it to the match play portion of the championship.
