Foushee, Prince Earn Medalist Honors in Oregon Amateur Championship Qualifying

Zach Foushee fired a 6-under par 65 on Tuesday to earn medalist honors in two-day qualifying for the 105th Oregon Amateur Championship at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore. Kendall Prince, the Oregon Women’s Amateur defending champion, shot a 2-under par 70 to finish with a two-day total of 141 (-3) and earn medalist honors.

The Championship now moves to match play, which begins tomorrow, June 18. The top 64 men and 32 women will compete against one another, hoping to make it to championship matches on Saturday, June 21.

Foushee, who ended up with a two-day qualifying total of 137 (-5), shot the low round of the entire qualifying on Tuesday and will be the number one seed in match play, which starts on Wednesday. Foushee will play Diego De La Torre, who was one of three players who earned a spot in match play after making it through a five-man playoff on Tuesday night. The other two players who qualified were Jack Dukeminier, the 2011 Oregon Amateur Champion, and Bryce Ward, who birdied the 18th hole to earn a spot in the playoff.

Prince, who won the 2013 Oregon Women’s Championship and plays collegiate golf at the University of Arizona, was tied for second going into the second round of qualifying on Tuesday. The first round leader, University of Oregon golfer Caroline Inglis, shot a 2-over par 74 and finished in a tie for second with 2010 Oregon Women’s Amateur champion and Arizona State golfer Monica Vaughn, who fired a 1-over par 73.

Foushee, who plays collegiately at the University of Oregon and won the 2013 Oregon Men's Stroke Play Championship, eagled his 18th hole, number nine, en route to a one-stroke victory in qualifying. At 138 (-4) for the qualifying, it was a four person tie: Thomas Lim, runner up in last year’s Championship and University of Oregon golfer; Kevin Murphy, who plays collegiately at Oregon State University and earned medalist honors in U.S. Open Local Qualifying last month; Justin Kadin, who played golf at the University of Idaho, and Justin Wiles, who played at Chico State University.

The first round leader, Kurt Simmons of Hermiston, Ore., shot 74 (+3) on Tuesday to finish in eighth place, with a two round total of 140 (-2).

First round match play matches will take place at the OGA Golf Course on Wednesday. By the end of the day, the field will be cut down to 32 men and 16 women.

The OGA Golf Course is playing to 6,531 yards with a slope and rating of 72.0/141 for the men and 5,938 yards with a slope and rating of 75.3/141 for the women. After cooler temperatures and intermittent rain showers on Monday and Tuesday, sunshine is in the forecast for the rest of the Championship.

The OGA Golf Course last hosted the Oregon Amateur Championship in 2003 and each year hosts numerous OGA, Oregon Junior Golf, Collegiate & High School tournaments.
