Geniza, Slama Lead After First Round of 18th Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship
Woodburn, Ore. - Tough course conditions and warm weather highlighted the first round of the 18th Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship, held at the OGA Golf Course from today through Thursday, July 3rd.
The Oregon Junior Stroke Play includes a field of 71 boys and 30 girls between the ages of 12-17, competing in their respective divisions.
In the Boys Division, Kevin Geniza (Corvallis, Ore.) leads after Tuesday, firing a 3-under par 69. Geniza shot 33 (-3) on the front nine, and after birdies on the 10th and 11th holes, was 5-under after 12. Two double bogies sent him back to 1-under, but a strong finish, with birdies on the final two holes, got him back to 3-under.
Cole Chrisman (Bend, Ore.) is in second after a first round 70 (-2), while Clayton Rajewich (Vancouver, Wash.) and Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, Wash.) are two shots back at -1 (71). Four players are at even par, including last week’s Oregon Junior Amateur Champion, Bryce Wortman (Klamath Falls, Ore.).
In the Girls Division, Ellie Slama (Salem, Ore.) is at 1-under par (71) after Tuesday’s first round, one shot ahead of Jennifer Krause (Eugene, Ore.). Slama, who along with Wortman won the Oregon Junior Amateur title in her respective division last week at Eagle Crest Resort, fired a bogey-less 34 (-2) on the back nine.
In third place is Haley Greb (Pendleton, Ore.), who shot a 1-over par 73. Ellen Secor (Portland, Ore.), who fell in the championship match to Slama last week, is three back after a first round 74 (+2).
After tomorrow’s round, the field in both divisions will be cut to the low half, including ties.
