Humphreys, Schiavone Lead After Day One of Oregon Junior Stroke Play
Brian Humphreys and Sophia Schiavone lead after day one of the Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship, held at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore.
Humphreys leads the Boys Division after firing a 6-under par 66 on Tuesday. Humphreys shot 33 on both nines and recorded six birdies and no bogies during his round. Right behind him is last week's Oregon Junior Amateur Champion Riley Elmes, who shot a 5-under par 67. Three other players are under par after the first day: Dylan Wu (70, -2), Kevin Geniza (71, -1) and Daniel Terrell (71, -1).
In the Girls Division, Schiavone played consistenly through her round, recording two bogies and two birdies, along with 14 pars. Seven players are within five strokes of first place, with Kaitlin Collom (73, +1) and Madison Odiorne (73, +1) just one stroke behind. Deanna Salvatori (74, +2) is alone in fourth place after Tuesday.
Temperatures climbed near 100 degrees on Tuesday, but it didn't stop many of the players from going low after the first day. A combined total of 27 players from both divisions shot 75 or under. The rest of the week is supposed to be more pleasant, with highs ranging from the high-70's to the low-80's.
The Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship is a 54-hole stroke play competition comprised of 76 boys and 28 girls. After 36 holes, the tournament cuts the field to the lowest half of each division plus ties to play in the third and final day.
