Jacobs Falls in Semifinals at U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur
Amanda Jacobs' run at the 2021 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship ended in the semifinal round with a 4 and 2 defeat to Aliea Clark Wednesday at Berkeley Hall Club (North Course) in Bluffton, S.C.
U.S. Mid-Amateurs (Sept. 25-30):
Jacobs and Clark traded turns winning holes over the front nine and were tied at the turn. Clark birdied Nos. 10 and 11 before pulling away to close the match on No. 16.
Jacobs, from Portland, played two matches on Wednesday. She opened the day by earning a 1 up victory in her quarterfinal match over the event’s defending champion Ina Kim-Schaad.
In that match, Jacobs grabbed a 2 up advantage after four holes and never relinquished the advantage. Kim-Schaad entered the contest as the only quarterfinalist who had not trailed in match play competition.
Earlier in the event Jacobs shot at 5-over par (72-77) to finish tied for 12th during stroke play qualifying. She then tallied match-play victories over Alisa White (3&2), Mariah Hopkins (1up) and Lana Weant (2up) before her win over Kim-Schaad.
Fellow OGA Members Lara Tennant, who is coming off her U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur title, and Gretchen Johnson also competed this past week at the national championship.
Tennant earned the No. 4 seed for match play after posting successive rounds of 74 and 71 during stroke play. She won matches over Kathy Hartwiger (2up) and Reona Hirai (22 holes) before dropping her Round of 16 contest to Kim-Schaad, 4&2. A win in that match would have pitted her against Jacobs in the quarterfinals.
Johnson tied for 40th in stroke play but fell in her opening round match to Erin Packer in 19 holes.
Also occurring Sept. 25-30 was the U.S. Mid-Amateur played at Sankaty Head Golf Club in Siasonset, Mass.
Taylor Klopp, one of four OGA Members in the field, advanced to match play after tying for 40th in stroke play (74-67). He lost in the Round of 64 to Andrew Bailey, 3&1.
Adam Harrington (70-73), Hunter Wescott (74-72) and Jay Poletiek (74-76) all competed but did not make the cut.
