Jacobs, Johnson, Stone to Represent OGA at 2017 USGA Women's State Team
SANTE FE, N.M. – Amanda Jacobs (Portland, Ore.), Gretchen Johnson (Portland, Ore.), and Brie Stone (Veneta, Ore.) will represent Oregon and the OGA at the upcoming 2017 USGA Women’s State Team Championship, held Sept. 26-28 at The Club at Las Campanas in Santa Fe, N.M.
All 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico may enter teams of three players. The two lowest scores of the three players count as the team’s score for each day. The team with the lowest aggregate score through 54 holes of play will win the title. This year will mark the final year of the USGA Women’s State Team Championship; the last Men’s State Team to occur happened in 2016.
This year’s team representing the OGA contains three successful and accomplished mid-amateurs. All three have won at least one OGA title within the past two years.
Jacobs competed in the 2015 USGA Women’s State Team, but represented Washington and the Washington State Golf Association. That year, she finished T24 individually and was the low scorer on Washington’s side. In 2017, Jacobs has had a successful year, including a runner-up finish each at the 108th Oregon Women’s Amateur Championship and the 2nd Oregon Amateur Four-Ball with Johnson, her playing partner. Jacobs also has two third place finishes this year – a solo third at the Oregon Women’s Mid-Amateur, and T3 at the OGA Tournament of Champions. Earlier in the summer, she advanced to the semifinals of the PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur.
Jacobs had a stellar 2016, when she won the Inaugural Oregon Amateur Four-Ball and the 2016 PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. She also advanced to the quarterfinals of last year’s U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur.
Johnson will be playing in her first USGA Women’s State Team event. She began her year by winning the 2017 OGA Tournament of Champions, then advanced to the quarterfinals of this year’s Oregon Women’s Amateur Championship. She and Jacobs finished second at the Oregon Amateur Four-Ball Championship, while Johnson also earned a runner-up finish at the 2017 PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur.
Johnson also qualified for this year’s U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, and finished T5 at the 2017 Oregon Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.
Stone is a perennial member of Team Oregon during this event; she’s represented the state and association the past three USGA Women’s State Team Championships (2011, 2013, 2015). This year, Stone earned a runner-up finish at the OGA Tournament of Champions, and two fourth-place finishes – a solo fourth at the Oregon Women’s Mid-Amateur, and a T4 at the Oregon Women’s Stroke Play.
In 2016, Stone won her incredible sixth Oregon Women’s Mid-Am title, in just the last seven years. She also finished in second at the 2016 OGA Tournament of Champions.
