Lim, Stoll win 105th Oregon Amateur Championships
[[{"attributes":{},"fields":{}}]]Thomas Lim of Moorpark, Calif. and Gigi Stoll of Beaverton, Ore. won the 105th Oregon Amateur and Oregon Women’s Amateur Championship, respectively, on Saturday, June 21st at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore.
Lim defeated Austin Landis (Gladstone, Ore.) in the championship match, 7 and 6. Lim, who was the runner up in last year’s match, birdied the final five holes to clinch this year’s Championship. Stoll defeated 2010 Oregon Women’s Amateur champion Monica Vaughn (Reedsport, Ore.) 7 and 5. Stoll finished with seven birdies through 31 holes, and also finished as runner up in last year’s Championship.
“The 105th edition of the Oregon Amateur and Oregon Women’s Amateur Championship was a huge success,” said Brent Whittaker, OGA Director of Tournament Operations. “We finished with two great champions in Thomas Lim and Gigi Stoll, and the OGA Golf Course held up perfectly the entire week.”
Lim got out to a quick start against Landis, the 2010 4A OSAA High School medalist, as he was 2-up through five holes. Lim extended his lead to five after two consecutive birdies on the 11th and 12th holes, but Landis came back to win the 13th and 14th holes to bring the deficit back to three. Lim birdied the par-4 18th hole to move his lead back to 4-up after the morning round.
On the second 18, Landis and Lim exchanged holes won, and after the 25th hole Lim was 3-up. On the par-3 26th hole (eighth hole), Landis hit his tee shot to eight feet, directly below the pin. Lim followed with a shot to about 20 feet. Lim knocked in his birdie putt, while Landis missed his, and thus begun a magical stretch for the eventual champion.
Lim went on to birdie the last five holes of the match, winning four of them, and defeated Landis 7 and 6. Lim said that losing in last year’s finals made winning this year a priority for him.
“It means a lot,” said Lim. “It was really disappointing losing to Nick [Chianello] last year, so the whole year I kind of dedicated myself to getting better. My goal was to try to come out and win this event, and coming out here and proving that I could do it, it’s just validation that my work has paid off the whole year.”
Stoll also jumped out to a quick lead on Vaughn. Up five through eight holes, Stoll birdied three of those eight holes in that span. Vaughn would get to within four on two different occasions during the first 18 holes, but Stoll would win the 13th, 14th and 16th holes to be 6-up after the morning round.
On the second 18, Stoll and Vaughn went back and forth, both winning two holes each on the first nine. Stoll would continue to hold her lead, 6-up, until the 31st hole. On the 148-yard par-3, Vaughn hit her tee shot in the water hazard on the right side, then conceded the hole and the match to Stoll, who won 7 and 5.
Stoll said her good start set the tone for the entire match.
“I played really solid,” said Stoll. “The first 18 [holes] I made a lot of putts, and that really helped out my round, and I made a lot of birdies throughout the week. I was really excited with how I was playing coming into the week, and it really paid off and it’s really exciting to be here after losing last year.”
