Match Play Set for 107th Oregon Amateur Championship as Raza, Stoll Earn Medalists Honors

BLACK BUTTE RANCH, ORE. – Sulman Raza (Eugene, Ore.) and Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.) each earned stroke play qualifying medalist honors and the number one seed in their respected bracket at the 107th Oregon Amateur Championship, held this week at Black Butte Ranch – Glaze Meadow in Black Butte Ranch, Ore.

Both men and women players participated in 36-hole stroke play qualifying Monday and Tuesday at Glaze Meadow. The men’s field was cut to the low-64 scores, while all 26 women advanced to match play beginning on Wednesday.

Raza, the University of Oregon collegiate golfer who won an NCAA team title with the Ducks last month, defeated Oregon State’s Kevin Murphy (Rogue River, Ore.) in a sudden-death playoff on the fourth playoff hole. After both players had opportunities to win on previous holes, Raza knocked his second shot out of the fairway bunker to within four feet from the hole. He then proceeded to make the putt, sealing his win and the number one seed in match play. Raza finished with scores of 71-69 – 140 (-4), while Murphy shot 68-72 – 140.

Justin Kadin (Corvallis, Ore.) and Cole Madey (West Linn, Ore.) tied for third place in stroke play qualifying, both finishing with a 141 (-3) total. Conner Barr (Beaverton, Ore.) shot 142 (-2), while Hogan Arey (Corvallis, Ore.) also finished under par at 143 (-1).

A six-for-five playoff to determine the final five players in the match play field was also decided after all regulation rounds were finished.

On Wednesday, the men’s bracket will play Round-of-64 matches, beginning at 9:09 AM, with the last men’s pairing going off at 1:48 PM.

Stoll, who competed with the University of Arizona Women’s Golf Team at the NCAA Championship in May, tied with last year’s stroke play medalist and Championship runner-up Madison Odiorne (Bend, Ore.) after 36 holes, with Stoll firing rounds of 77-73 – 150 (+6) and Odiorne finishing with 78-72 – 150.

In the sudden-death playoff, Odiorne made a 15-foot par putt after putting her third shot in the bunker to force a second playoff hole. On the par-5 2nd hole, Stoll hit her second shot on the green, two-putting for birdie from about 12 feet out. Odiorne missed her 15-foot birdie try in her attempt to extend the match.

Oregon State’s Haley Nist (Meridian, Idaho) and University of Nevada – Reno commit Jenny Krause (Eugene, Ore.) finished in a tie for third, one shot back at 151 (+7). Daniele Giles finished at 152 (+8), and Krissy Peterson (Canby, Ore.) earned sixth place with a two-day total of 154 (+10).

With the women’s field at 26, the match play bracket will be set for a 32-person field. Therefore, the top six seeds from stroke play qualifying have a first round bye; all others will play a first-round match tomorrow morning, starting at 7:30 AM. Round-of-16 matches will also take place Wednesday, starting at 2:06 PM.
