Medford's Jake Quast Overall Leader After Day One of Oregon Men's Stroke Play Championship
MEDFORD, ORE. – Jake Quast (Medford, Ore.), Brad Karns (Vancouver, Wash.) and Jim Dunlap (Beaverton, Ore.) lead their
respective divisions after the first round of the 64th Oregon Men’s Stroke Play Championship, currently being held at Centennial Golf Club in Medford, Ore.
All three divisions (Open, Senior, Master-40) will have its field cut in half after tomorrow’s round, including ties.
Quast, who’s from Medford and whose home course is Centennial GC, carded an impressive 6-under par 66 on Friday to lead the Open Division by one shot. His round included nothing worse than a par, and his consistent play included four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 11th hole. He narrowly missed a birdie on the par-5 9th hole, his final hole of the day, after his 12-foot birdie try just skimmed the edge of the cup. Quast currently plays golf at Dominican University of California in San Rafael.
In second place is Conner Kumpula (Albany, Ore.), Oregon State golfer and champion of this event in 2014. His 67 (-5) is one shot better than Brian Humphreys (Washougal, Wash.), who sits in third place
after day one at 4-under par. An incoming freshman at Boise State University, Humphreys advanced to the finals of this year’s 2016 Oregon Amateur Championship before falling in the championship match.
Five players are currently tied for fourth place at 3-under par: 2015 OGA Tournament of Champions winner and Loyola Marymount golfer Riley Elmes (Lake Oswego, Ore.); Medford native and 2016 Class 6A state boys golf champion Reese Fisher (Medford, Ore.); University of Kansas golfer Charlie Hillier (Oregon City, Ore.); Southern Oregon native and Oregon State golfer Kevin Murphy (Rogue River, Ore.) and Saint Martin’s University’s Austin Spicer (Gresham Ore.).
Karns totaled five birdies in his round, including the 16th and 17th holes to finish his day in the lead in the Senior Division at 2-under par (70). Just one shot behind is defending Oregon Senior Men’s Stroke Play champion Pat O’Donnell (Happy Valley, Ore.), who’s coming off low-amateur honors at this week’s Senior Oregon Open, finishing fourth overall. Tied with O’Donnell for second place is Marty Morlan
(Ashland, Ore.), who totaled three birdies on the back nine of his home course to finish just one shot off the lead.
Charley Griswold (Bend, Ore.), Tom Prevost (McMinnville, Ore.) and Denny Taylor (Gladstone, Ore.) are all tied for fourth after day one, standing at even-par.
Dunlap is attempting to go back-to-back after winning the Master-40 title at last year’s Oregon Men’s Stroke Play Championship. His even-par round of 72 was consistent, and despite a double-bogey on the par-4 5th hole, featured three birdies. He leads Cameron Mitchell (Bend, Ore.), Cody Pinkston (Eugene, Ore.) and Jeff Ward (Bend, Ore.) by three shots after all three players fired rounds of 75 (+3) on Friday.
