Cole Madey (West Linn, Ore.) fired the only under-par round of the day on Tuesday to lead the men’s field, while Amanda Elich (Camas, Wash.) and Tara Finigan (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) are tied at the top of the women’s leaderboard after the first 18-holes of stroke play qualifying.
After tomorrow’s stroke play round is completed, the men’s field will be narrowed to the top-64 scores – with match play beginning Thursday. In the women’s field, all 31 competitors will advance to match play, with the top seed earning a bye into the round of 16.
Madey, who recently completed his sophomore season at UCLA, fired an impressive 7-under par 64 on Tuesday, and leads stroke play qualifying by eight shots heading into Wednesday’s second round. Playing on his home course, Madey totaled seven birdies and zero bogies during his round – an outstanding feat, considering he’s the only player currently under par.
A three-way tie for second place at 1-over par features familiar names. Riley Elmes (Lake Oswego, Ore.), Pat O’Donnell (Happy Valley, Ore.), and Charles Sitton V (West Linn, Ore.) are tied at 1-over par. Elmes, who plays collegiately at Loyola Marymount University, and Sitton, both call The Oregon Golf Club home. O’Donnell was last year’s OGA Golfer of the Year and has won the last three Oregon Senior Amateur titles.
Seven players are tied for fifth place at 2-over par. While the field looks toward Madey’s name at the top of the leaderboard, the top-64 players will move on to match play after tomorrow’s round of stroke play qualifying.
On the women’s side of the event, Elich and Finigan are tied for first after both shot rounds of 2-over par (74). Elich plays golf collegiately at the University of Houston, while Finigan plays at Portland State University.
In a tie for third place at 4-over par is Amanda Jacobs (Portland, Ore.) and Ellen Secor (Portland, Ore.). Jacobs is an accomplished amateur golfer who won last year’s PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2016 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Secor recently finished her freshman year at Colorado State University.
Two-time champion Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.) sits in fifth place after a 77 (+5). Stoll gained momentum on the back-nine after knocking in her tee shot on the par-3 12th hole for a hole-in-one, following it up with a birdie on the par-5 13th. Defending champion Krissy Peterson (Canby, Ore.) struggled on Tuesday, finishing her round at 10-over par (82) and in a tie for 13th.
Wednesday’s tee times begin at 7:30 AM with the morning wave, running until 9:40 AM. In the afternoon, tee times go from 12:30 PM until the final tee time at 2:30 PM.
