First Round Matches Complete at 108th Oregon Amateur Championship; McKay Medals in Oregon Senior Women's Amateur
It’s on to the next round of match play for both men and women players at the 108th Oregon Amateur Championship, while Loree McKay (Portland, Ore.) earned medalist honors in stroke play qualifying in the 34th Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, as both events are being held concurrently at The Oregon Golf Club.

Friday will feature round of 32 and round of 16 matches in the men’s field, while the women’s field will play round of 16 matches only. At the Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur, first-round matches and the quarterfinals will commence on Friday.
Thirteen total players participated in stroke play qualifying at the Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur, with McKay medaling after shooting an 8-over par 80. While she started her qualifying round with a double-bogey on the first hole, she recovered well, shooting 39 (+3) on the front side before bogeying her final three holes for a 41 (+5) on the back nine.
McKay, the top seed in match play, will receive a first-round bye, along with the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds. Leilani Norman (Eugene, Ore.) is the second seed after firing an 82 (+10) on Thursday, while Lara Tennant (Portland, Ore.) is the No. 3 seed, also shooting 82 during stroke play qualifying.
Defending champion Anita Wicks (Roseburg, Ore.) fired an 85 (+13) on Thursday, and is the No. 6 seed for match play beginning Friday.
The Women’s Amateur competition narrowed its field from 31 to 16 on Thursday. Top-seed Ellen Secor (Portland, Ore.), who had a bye into the round of 16, will play Hannah Swanson (Forest Grove, Ore.) on Friday. Swanson defeated Jessica Young (Wedderburn, Ore.) in Thursday’s first round.
An intriguing storyline to follow on Friday will be the second-round match between sisters Amanda and Kristin Elich (Camas, Wash.). Amanda, the No. 2 seed, won 7 and 5 on Thursday to advance, while Kristin, the No. 15 seed, earned a hard-fought win over Kendall Freeman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) 1-up.
Defending champion Krissy Peterson (Canby, Ore.) will play University of Nevada, Reno golfer Kristin Collom (Klamath Falls, Ore.) in the round of 16. Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.), 2014 and 2015 champion and University of Arizona golfer, will play George Fox golf team member Rachel Drgastin (Bend, Ore.).
A pair of mid-ams – No 3. Seed Amanda Jacobs (Portland, Ore.) and No. 14 seed Rosie Cook (Bend, Ore.) will square off after each advanced through the round of 32, Jacobs with a 6&4 win over Korey Cimock (Hood River, Ore.) and Cooks with a 3&2 victory over George Fox player Madison Perry (Portland, Ore.). Mid-am Gretchen Johnson (Portland, Ore.). also advanced and will face Portland State player Tara Finigan (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) in the round of 16.
The Men’s field began the day with 64 players looking to advance to Friday’s round of 32. Medalist and UCLA player Cole Madey (West Linn, Ore.) made quick work of his opponent, No. 64 seed and Valparaiso player Jeremy Wu (Medford, Ore.), winning 6&5. Madey will face mid-am Jim Dunlap (Tigard, Ore.) in the round of 32, who staged an epic comeback win against Daniel Dolan (Oregon City, Ore.), winning on the 22nd hole. No. 2 seed Riley Elmes (West Linn, Ore.) advanced by default, while No. 3 seed CJ Sitton (West Linn, Ore.) and No. 4 seed Marcus Potter (Tualatin, Ore.) enjoyed lopsided victories to solidify their places in Friday’s matchups.
A batch of freshman collegiate players had their share of success in the round of 32, led by Boise State player and 2017 Mountain West Conference Champion, Brian Humphreys (Washougal, Wash.), who polished off Michael Senatra (Happy Valley, Ore.), 4&3. 2015 Oregon Junior Amateur Champion and San Jose State freshman Bryce Wortman (Klamath Falls, Ore.) won his match, 2up, over Christian Muscarello (Tucson, Ariz.). Rounding out the freshman highlights is University of Oregon player Kevin Geniza (Corvallis, Ore.), who needed 20 holes to defeat his opponent, Clare Langford (Bend, Ore.).
The Men’s round of 32 will lead-off tomorrow, with the first tee time scheduled for 7:30am. The Women’s round of 16 will commence at 10:03am, and the Senior Women’s round of 16 will follow. After a lunch break, the Men’s Round of 16 matches will conclude the day. Spectators are welcome to attend.
