Championship Matches to Commence Sunday at 108th Oregon Amateur, 34th Oregon Senior Women's Amateur
WEST LINN, ORE. – The Championship matches are confirmed and set for Sunday at the 108th Oregon Amateur and 34th Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur, both held this week at The Oregon Golf Club in West Linn, Ore.
The men’s final will feature No. 1 seed Cole Madey (West Linn, Ore.) and Brian Humphreys (Washougal, Wash.), the No. 22 seed. The women’s final will include No. 3 seed Amanda Jacobs (Portland, Ore.) and No. 5 seed Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.). The Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur championship match pits No. 4 seed Lara Tennant (Portland, Ore.) against No. 10 seed Patti O’Mara (West Linn, Ore.).
The men’s and women’s championship matches will be 36 holes. Madey vs. Humphreys will begin at 7:30 AM, and Jacobs vs. Stoll will start at 7:40 AM. The Senior Women’s Amateur final between Tennant and O’Mara will be 18 holes and will tee off at 12:00 PM.
Madey, out of UCLA, was challenged in both his matches on Saturday. Against William Snow (Vancouver, Wash.) in the quarters, Madey led the entire way, but his lead was cut to 1-up going into the 16th hole. Wins on the 16th and 17th sealed the 3&1 victory. In the semis against former Oregon Amateur champion Blake Seabaugh (Tigard, Ore.), Madey found himself 1-down after seven holes. He would go on to win four of the next five holes, and ultimately the match, 3&2.
Humphreys is returning to the Oregon Amateur finals after falling in last year’s championship against Conner Barr. Humphreys looked solid in a 3&2 win against Daniel Cheremnov (Hubbard, Ore.) in the quarterfinals, and went against Loyola Marymount golfer Riley Elmes (Lake Oswego, Ore.) on his home course in the semifinals. In the 100+ degree heat, Humphreys was on fire against Elmes. He won 5&4, and was 4-under par in his round when the match ended.
Humphreys, out of Boise State, was the first freshman to ever win the Mountain West Conference Tournament in 2017.
The women’s final features two accomplished golfers who held off tough challengers in the semifinals. Jacobs, out of Central Catholic High School in Portland and former University of Idaho star, began her day by beating Gretchen Johnson (Portland, Ore.) 4&3 in the quarterfinals. She faced off against Kristin Elich (Camas, Wash.) in the semifinals. Elich gave Jacobs all she could handle; once down three, she cut the Jacobs lead to 1-up going into the 15th hole. But Jacobs guaranteed her win with a par on the par-3 17th.
Stoll, out of the University of Arizona, will be making her fifth-consecutive Oregon Women’s Amateur Championship match appearance, winning in 2014 and 2015. She took control midway through her quarterfinal match against Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.) and faced Hannah Swanson (Forest Grove, Ore.) in the semifinals, with Swanson fresh off of knocking off last year’s champion, Krissy Peterson (Canby, Ore.) in the quarters. Stoll led 1-up for most of the match, as Swanson wouldn’t go away. But an eagle on the par-5 13th hole gave Stoll a 2-up lead, and although she gave one back to Swanson on the 14th hole, she won the 15th hole and ended up winning the match 2&1.
In the Senior Women’s Amateur bracket, Tennant defeated two impressive players in their own right to advance to Sunday’s final. She beat Ginny Burkey (Eugene, Ore.) 3&2 in the quarterfinals, and then held off medalist and No. 1 seed Loree McKay (Portland, Ore.) in the semifinals for a 2&1 victory.
O’Mara, who like Tennant is a member of Waverley Country Club in Portland, beat two former champions to make it to the championship match. In the quarterfinals, she led by as much as 4-up before defeating defending champion Anita Wicks (Roseburg, Ore.) 2&1. In the semifinals, O’Mara defeated Marcia Fisher (Molalla, Ore.) 2&1 in a match that featured only two halved holes.
