WinCo Foods Portland Open and Web.com Tour Update

The WinCo Foods Portland Open presented by Kraft Heinz is the final regular-season event on the Web.com Tour. This year is the fourth edition of the Portland area event held at the renowned Witch Hollow course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, host site of Tiger Woods’ historic U.S. Amateur “three-peat” and several national championships. The following are storylines of the players who will be making a stop in Portland later this summer.

CLASS OF 2015 CONTINUES STRONG CAMPAIGN
The 2015 group of players to earn their PGA TOUR card at the WinCo Foods Portland Open featured young stars including Daniel Berger, Justin Thomas, Si Woo Kim and Harold Varner III. Last week at the Travelers Championship, Berger forced a playoff with Jordan Spieth who ultimately hit what will likely go down as shot of the year when he holed a bunker shot to seal his second victory of the season. Meanwhile, Berger notched his second runner up finish of the year and finds himself 4th in the FedExCup standings. One week earlier Thomas broke a U.S. Open record when he fired a 9-under par 63, posting the lowest round in relation to par in the tournament’s 117-year history. This May, Si Woo Kim became the youngest winner of THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP and all three players are well on their way to qualifying for this year’s Presidents Cup at Liberty National Golf Club.

STEPH CURRY TO COMPETE IN WEB.COM TOUR EVENT
Two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry accepted a sponsor’s exemption this week to compete in the Ellie Mae Classic in early August. Curry, who owns a 2 handicap has played a handful of Pro-Am and Celebrity events, this will be the first time he competes in an official PGA TOUR sanctioned competition. “When I found out I was getting a sponsor’s exemption, I had a lot of emotions about it because I love to play golf. It’s a passion of mine.” Curry continued, “[the] Web.com Tour has so much talent it’s unreal.” TPC Stonebrae plays host to the event, last year Stephan Jaeger won with a 4-round total of 30-under par which included a historic round of 58.

2017 WEB.COM TOUR MEMBER TO WATCH

Ted Potter Jr. – 33 – Ocala, Florida

Lefty Ted Potter has put together the most consistent season on the Web.com Tour thus far. With 9 top-25 finishes including a runner-up, third place and 5 top-10’s he finds himself inside the top-5 on the Web.com Tour Money List and in position to finish what he started last year in Portland.

Potter opened last year’s Portland Open with rounds of 70 and 61, the latter of which is the Witch Hollow course record. Ultimately, he went on to finish T-4 and missed out on earning his PGA TOUR card. This year Potter, a proven PGA TOUR winner (2012 Greenbrier Classic) appears poised to redeem himself and leave Portland a member of the PGA TOUR. He’ll look to continue his fine form in the summer months leading up to the regular season finale here in Portland.
