WinCo Foods Portland Open Begins Thursday

What You Need to Know

25 PGA TOUR CARDS TO BE AWARDED AT REGULAR SEASON FINALE IN PORTLAND: The Web.com Tour heads to Portland for the regular season finale at the WinCo Foods Portland Open presented by Kraft-Heinz with 25 PGA TOUR cards on the line. Twenty-two-year-old Beau Hossler, who missed his first cut of the season last week in Knoxville, arrives holding onto the final spot in The 25. Roberto Diaz leads Hossler by $57 for the 24th spot. The other bubble to watch in Portland is the battle for the top 75. Finishing in the top 75 earns players fully exempt status on the Web.com Tour for the 2018 season and secures their spot in the Web.com Tour Finals, where 25 more PGA TOUR cards will be on the line. Brady Schnell currently sits in the 75th spot with $59,647 in earnings, while Ben Taylor resides in 76th at $58,718 after a career-best T7 finish last week in Knoxville.

PUMPKIN RIDGE’S STORIED HISTORY SETS STAGE FOR SUNDAY DRAMA:  A year ago, Ryan Brehm posted a one-shot victory over Mark Anderson at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club’s Witch Hollow Course to jump from 30th on the money list to fourth to secure his PGA TOUR card. Pumpkin Ridge hosted the 1996 U.S. Amateur Championship, where Tiger Woods famously won his third consecutive title in a historic 38-hole finale with Steve Scott. The 21-year anniversary of that record-setting win is this Friday, August 25. Pumpkin Ridge has also hosted two U.S. Women’s Open Championships (1997, 2003), the 2000 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, the 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, and four LPGA Tour events.

ROB OPPENHEIM ONCE AGAIN ON THE BUBBLE HEADING INTO PORTLAND: Rob Oppenheim is once again on the bubble heading into the Regular Season finale at No. 26 on the money list. Oppenheim recorded his fourth top-10 of the season a week ago in Knoxville with a T5 finish to jump up to No. 26 on the money list, just $6,257 short of Beau Hossler. Oppenheim famously finished 26th on the 2015 Regular Season money list, 25th on the 2015 Web.com Tour Finals money list, and 26th  on the 2016 Web.com Tour Finals money list when the final event – the Web.com Tour Championship – was cancelled due to Hurricane Matthew. The 37-year-old found out two years ago that he secured his PGA TOUR card for the first time at a gas station. After thinking he’d missed getting his TOUR card by a shot at the Web.com Tour Championship, Oppenheim headed back towards his home in Orlando, Fla., but received a call 30 miles down the road that Lucas Glover had double bogeyed the last, moving him into a tie for 12th and helping him secure his card by $101.

THE RACE TO SECURE ONE OF 25 PGA TOUR CARDS: At the conclusion of the WinCo Foods Portland Open presented by Kraft-Heinz this week, the top 25 players on the 2017 Web.com Tour money list will earn their PGA TOUR cards for the 2017-18 season. TALOR GOOCH SECURES PGA TOUR CARD WITH FIRST CAREER VICTORY AT NEWS SENTINEL OPEN: Talor Gooch secured his PGA TOUR card and first Web.com Tour victory after coming from five shots back on Sunday to defeat Jonathan Hodge by one with a final-round 6-under 65 at the News Sentinel Open presented by Pilot. In his last two starts, Gooch has posted a runner-up and a victory to move up to No. 3 on the Regular Season money list. The 25-year-old former Oklahoma State Cowboy trailed Hodge by two shots with five holes to play but poured in back-to-back short birdies at Nos. 14 and 15, while Hodge three-putted the 13th, to secure the outright victory after Hodge failed to chip-in for birdie on the 72nd hole.

22 WEB.COM TOUR GRADS FROM 2016 HEAD TO NEW YORK FOR THE FEDEXCUP PLAYOFFS: The PGA TOUR Regular Season concluded Sunday at the Wyndham Championship with 22 Web.com Tour graduates from the class of 2016 advancing to the FedExCup Playoffs including 11 rookies. Wesley Bryan, who won the 2016 Web.com Tour Regular Season money list with three victories, was the highest-ranked player among the 2016 grads at No. 27 in the FedExCup standings. In total, nine 2016 grads won on TOUR this season. 23 grads from a year ago finished between Nos. 125-200 in the FedExCup standings and will have a chance to regain their TOUR card at the Web.com Tour Finals.

2017 WEB.COM TOUR MEMBER TO WATCH

Jonathan Hodge – 30 – Knoxville, Tennessee:  With the hometown crowd cheering him on last week at the News Sentinel Open, Jonathan Hodge charged into sole possession of the lead in the final round with birdies on four of his first five holes. Hodge added two more birdies at Nos. 8 and 10 but played his last six holes in 1-over after three-putting the 13th hole to fall to Talor Gooch by one shot. Despite falling just one shot short of a playoff, Hodge’s career-best, runner-up finish moved him up to No. 34 on the Regular Season money list with one event remaining.

In 18 Web.com Tour starts this season, Hodge has made 15 cuts with two top-fives. The 30-year-old earned Web.com Tour status with a T42 finish at the final stage of the Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournament. Entering this season, the Jasper, Tennessee resident had made just seven cuts in 22 starts. During a decorated, four-year career at the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga, Hodge earned back-to-back Southern Conference Player of the Year honors in 2007 and 2008 with three collegiate victories.
