109th Oregon Amateur -- Players to Watch
The 109th Oregon Amateur Championship field features some of the region's best golfers. Here's a look at just a few competitors to keep an eye on during the championship.
Chris Polski – Eugene, Ore.Polski, the current Associate Head Coach of both the men's and women's golf teams at Northwest Christian University in Eugene, has been a perennial competitor for many years. At the 2017 Oregon Amateur at The Oregon Golf Club, Polski advanced to the quarterfinals. And in 2009, Polski advanced to the finals of the Oregon Amateur, also representing Oregon at that year's USGA State Team Championship and earning OGA Golfer of the Year. |
Jennifer Krause – Eugene, Ore.Krause is a two-time OGA Championship winner -- she earned her first OGA win at the 2016 OGA Women's Tournament of Champions, and in 2017, Krause won the Oregon Women's Public Links Championship. The junior-to-be at the University of Nevada - Reno competed in all 10 events for the Wolfpack during the 2017-18 season. At the 2017 Oregon Amateur, Krause fell in the round of 32 after earning the No. 12 seed during stroke play qualifying. |
Ryan DeCastilhos – Bend, Ore.DeCastilhos broke out in 2017 with a runner-up finish at the 2nd Oregon Amateur Four-Ball Championship, alongside playing partner Clare Langford (also in this year's Oregon Amateur field). In last year's Oregon Amateur, DeCastilhos took former Oregon Amateur champion Jack Dukeminier to the 19th hole in the round of 64, but ultimately fell in extra holes. A former prep and junior golf star, DeCastilhos is looking for success in his hometown. |
Amy Anderson – Bend, Ore.Anderson earned her first OGA Championship win in 2017, when her and Kailin Downs won the 2nd Oregon Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship, played at Black Butte Ranch. Anderson (formerly Mombert) is a past star golfer at Weber State University, and will be playing her home course at this year's Oregon Amateur. Her brother, Brad, will be playing in the men's championship. |
Calvin Green – Springfield, Ore.A former OGA champion, Green will be looking to break out at this year's Oregon Amateur. The former Northwest Christian University golfer won the 2016 Oregon Public Links at Emerald Valley Golf & Resort, his home course, and had a solid 2017 season. He advanced to match play at the Oregon Amateur, and tied for sixth at the 2017 Oregon Men's Stroke Play Championship. At the 2015 Oregon Amateur, he fell to the eventual champion, Alistair Docherty, in the round of 32. |
Amanda Elich – Camas, Wash.Elich had an impressive 2017 OGA season. The University of Houston golfer earned the No. 2 seed in match play at last year's Oregon Amateur, ultimately falling in the round of 16 to her sister, Kristin. Elich also played well at the 2017 Oregon Women's Stroke Play Championship, earning a top-5 finish. During her sophomore season in 2017-18, Elich carded a career-best T-10 finish at the LSU Tiger Classic in March. |
Noah Yano – Portland, Ore.Yano has played in two OGA Championships so far in 2018, finishing T9 at the OGA Tournament of Champions and a T17 finish at the Oregon Mid-Amateur. In 2017, he broke out with a win at the 100th Portland City Championship, played at Eastmoreland Golf Club. His most recent Oregon Amateur result was in 2014, when he advanced to the round of 16 at the OGA Golf Course. |
Hailey Oster – Camas, Wash.Oster graduated this month from Camas High School after a stellar junior golf career. She earned a second-consecutive ninth place finish at the Washington 4A State Tournament, and was named The Columbian's All-Region girls golfer of the year. In 2017, she won the Portland City/Bob Allard Memorial, one of Oregon Junior Golf's major tournaments, held at Rose City Golf Course every year. Oster will be playing at Montana State University in the fall. |
Richie Mikesell – Bend, Ore.Another former junior golf standout, Mikesell will be looking to continue his success in local events from past years. He and his playing partner, Brett Wolvert, advanced to the quarterfinals of last year's Oregon Amateur Four-Ball Championship. In 2016, Mikesell finished runner-up at the Oregon Junior Amateur Championship, as well as won the Oregon 6A State Golf Championship with Summit High School. |
Iliana Telles – The Dalles, Ore.Telles will be a sophomore at Portland State, where she completed a successful freshman season with the Vikings. She's a former Oregon Junior Amateur semifinalist, and had plenty of success as a prep golfer, finishing in the top-10 at each state golf tournament she played in. Telles comes from a golf family, with older brother Damian recently competing in 2018 U.S. Open sectional qualifying. |
