Sandy Cameron Medals at Oregon Senior Women's Amateur; Match Play Begins at Oregon Amateur

BEND, Ore. – Sandy Cameron (Redmond, Ore.) shot a 3-over par 75 Wednesday to earn medalist honors during stroke play qualifying of the 35th Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, held this week at Bend Golf Club in Bend, Ore.
Also taking place on Wednesday were first-round matches in the men’s and women’s fields of the 109th Oregon Amateur Championship.

Thursday will include round of 16 matches for the Senior Women and Women fields. The Men’s field will play both round of 32 and round of 16 matches on Thursday.

Cameron, of Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, is playing in her first Oregon Senior Women’s Amateur. She was 1-under par after birdieing the par-3 12th hole, and even after bogeying the final three holes, earned medalist honors by two shots. Cameron will be the No. 1 seed in match play beginning Thursday.
Barbara Walley (Bend, Ore.), another local player, earned second place after firing a 5-over par 77. Ginny Burkey (Eugene, Ore.) was third at 6-over par, while Marcia Fisher (Molalla, Ore.), seven-time Oregon Women’s Amateur winner, earned fourth at 8-over par.
Lara Tennant (Portland, Ore.), as the defending champion, opted to take the No. 2 seed in match play.
In Oregon Amateur play on Wednesday, first-round matches were completed despite a 105-minute suspension of play in the afternoon due to lightning. The men’s field was cut to the round of 32, while the women’s field is now down to the final 16.
Top seeds Justin Kadin (Corvallis, Ore.), Trevor Harding (Portland, Ore.) and Craig Ronne (Klamath Falls, Ore.) all advanced to the round of 32 by winning their first-round match. The biggest upset of the day came with No. 61 seed Todd Strible (Bend, Ore.) beating the No. 4 seed, Adam Harrington (Portland, Ore.), 4&3.
Notable round of 32 matchups include the No. 2 seed Harding against 2008 Oregon Amateur champion Blake Seabaugh (Tigard, Ore.); two-time Oregon Amateur runner-up and Boise State rising junior Brian Humphreys (Vancouver, Wash.) against Hunter Wescott (Portland, Ore.), Dominican College incoming senior and all-conference selection in 2017-18; Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year Reese Fisher (Medford, Ore.) against San Jose State golfer Bryce Wortman (Creswell, Ore.), and former University of Oregon golfer and back-to-back Royal Oaks Invitational winner Robbie Ziegler (Portland, Ore.) against the University of Idaho’s Cole Chrisman (Bend, Ore.), a Bend native.
The women’s field did not include a single lower-seeded upset on Wednesday. With the top six seeds receiving byes, the full field of 16 remaining players will all be in action on Thursday.
The longest match of the day in either field came between Bend Golf Club member Amy Anderson (Bend, Ore.) and University of Nevada – Reno rising junior Jenny Krause (Eugene, Ore.). The match advanced to 21 holes until Krause earned the victory and the right to play the No. 2 seed Ellen Secor (Portland, Ore.) of Colorado State in the round of 16.
Notable round of 16 matches include former Portland State golfer Hannah Swanson (Forest Grove, Ore.) against last year’s Oregon Women’s Amateur runner-up Amanda Jacobs (Portland, Ore.); Oregon State rising junior Ellie Slama (Salem, Ore.) against two-time OGA Tournament of Champions winner Gretchen Johnson (Portland, Ore.); an all-Pac-12 battle between Emily Baumgart (Pullman, Wash.) of Washington State and Madi Daniel (Bakersfield, Calif.) of the University of Oregon, and a Mountain West Conference matchup against Secor of Colorado State and Krause of Nevada – Reno.
