Penifold, Kim, De La Torre, co-medal at Stone Creek Oregon Amateur Qualifier
Oregon City, Ore. - The second of three qualifiers for the 105th Oregon Amateur Championship was held at the 6,668-yard, par-72, Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City, Ore. At this qualifier for the Men's division, 37 golfers automatically advanced to the Championship proper which will be held June 16 - 21 at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore.
There was a four way tie for medalist Jerry Penifold of Bandon, Ore, Arthur Kim of Tigard, Ore Diego De La Torre of Brush Prairie, Wash and Noah Yano of Lake Oswego, Ore. Each player managed to finish at 1-under par 71. Stone Creek played tough as only six players in the field were able to shoot even par or better.
A playoff for the last four spots occurred with those players that finished at 7-over par. Only nine of the eleven players showed up and it was a battle of wills for players to gain the last few entries into the Oregon Amateur. After the first playoff hole, Edward Lee of Portland, Ore and Bert Skerl of Portland, Ore were eliminated after making bogey. The other seven players carried on to the second hole, a 180 yard par 3 where Jered Darby of Oregon City, Ore and Jeremy Powers, Boise, Id were eliminated. The third hole finally benefited for Maurisio Rayas, John Micheal-Pilot and Cody Johnsen who were able to secure spots.
That left the two David’s, David Anderson of Portland, Ore and David Patterson of Vancouver, Wash to compete for the final spots. Both players easily got up and down for par after the fourth playoff. Because of daylight concerns, the players went to the eighth hole, which would have been over if not for an incredible chip in for par from Anderson. Both players made par on nine and in the dark and hitting from deep rough Patterson failed to get up and down for par leaving Anderson with the final spot into the Oregon Amateur.
Anderson now joins 31 exempt players along with the 36 qualifiers plus the qualifiers at the Quail Valley site into the championship. This year’s championship proper will include such notables as Thomas Lim, runner up from last year and Scott Hval the reigning Oregon Senior Amateur Champion.
There is one remaining qualifier scheduled for June 8 at the Widgi Creek Golf Course in Bend, Ore.
