Johnson Falls in Round of 16 at U.S. Women's Mid-Am

Gretchen Johnson lost to Talia Campbell, 3&2, in the Round of 16 of the 2019 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship with a played Sept. 14-19 at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz.

Johnson, the 61st seed from Portland, recorded a massive upset in the opening round of match play with her 2&1 victory over fourth-seeded Caryn Wilson. Johnson then posted a 1-up victory over Melissa Loh, the 29th seed, in the Round of 32.

Amanda Jacobs (Portland) also advanced to the match play competition as the No. 26 seed. She dropped the opening-round match against No. 39 Katie Miller, 5&3.

Jacobs finished tied for 24th after the 36-hole stroke-play portion of the comptition, with rounds of 75 and 73. Johnson shot an opening round 80 and followed that with a 75 to place tied for 55th.

Shannon Kennedy (Portland) also qualified for this year’s event, posting scores of 83 and 87 during stroke play before missing the cut. Kennedy won the local qualifier played in August at Creekside GC in Salem.

Jacobs was exempt from qualifying as she is a Top 25 age-eligible points leader in the Women's World Amateur Golf Ranking. Johnson was also exempt as a 2018 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur semifinalist.
