Tibbits Falls in Round of 32 at U.S. Amateur

Spencer Tibbits lost his Round of 32 match at the 120th U.S. Amateur ending being played Aug. 10-16 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Tibbitts, the 2019 Oregon Amateur Champion from Vancouver, lost his match 3&1 to Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach, Calif.

U.S. Amateur (Aug. 10-16):

Tibbits fared well in stroke play qualifying over the event’s first two days, shooting a 2-under par 70 on day one and a 3-over par 74 on day two. His first round was played Monday at Bandon Trails (Par 71) while the second round took place Tuesday on Bandon Dunes (Par 72). He took the No. 48 seed into the 64-player match play bracket.

On Wednesday in the round of 64 against Michael Brennan of Leesburg, Va., Tibbits birdied his first three holes to take an early 3up lead. He maintained that advantage through the turn, gave one hole back after Brennan eagled Hole No. 10, before concluding the match on the 18th hole for the 2&1 finish. At one point, Tibbits held a 4up advantage when he registered birdie to take Hole No. 7.

In Wednesday’s round of 32 match, Tibbits fell behind 4up with eight holes to play. He rallied to biridie holes Nos. 11, 13 and 14 to trail by just one hole, but Hagestad won holes Nos. 16 and 17 to end the match.

The U.S. Amateur Championship continues through Sunday, Aug. 16. Next up on the USGA Championships schedule is the U.S. Open slated for Sept. 17-20 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
