Two Men, Four Women Qualify for U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships

Two men and four women advanced to compete in their respective U.S. Senior Amateur Championships in qualifying rounds on Wednesday, Aug. 4 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland.

Bill Winter and Jeff Wright qualified for the men’s event, which will be held Aug. 28-Sept. 2 at Country Club of Detroit. In Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Both players tied for first with a score of 1-over par 72.

Vince Price and Brian Leff are 1st and 2nd alternate, both finishing the qualifying at 2-over par.

The women’s national championship will be held Sept. 10-15 at The Lakewood Club in Point Clear, Ala.

Rosie Cook led the way finishing with a 2-over par 74, a round that included a birdie on hole Nos. 1 and 16. Ginny Burkey (77), Sandra Turbide (78) and Cappy Mack (78) also qualified in Wednesday’s round at Columbia Edgewater CC.

Edwina Mckay and Anita Rosemeyer finished as first and second alternates.

The OGA will administer the men’s and women’s U.S. Mid-Am qualifying Aug. 23 at Portland Golf Club. The final USGA qualifier of the year will occur Sept. 20 and will be for the men’s and women’s U.S. Amateur Four-Ball.
