Woo Qualifies For US Amateur

Redmond, Ore. – Twenty-eight players battled the heat and the 36 hole test at Eagle Crest Resort- Ridge Course vying for one spot into the US Amateur Championship. Jonathan Woo of Eugene, Ore. withstood the 36 hole test of the Ridge Course 6,970-yards par 72 course and bested fellow competitors fighting for the opportunity to compete for the ultimate amateur championship - the US Amateur, which will be held at Atlanta Athletic Club’s – Highlands Course in Johns Creek, GA, August 11-17.

It was a warm day in Redmond with temperatures in the 90’s and players battled it out for one spot into the Championship. Regardless of the heat, this marathon golf competition saw low scoring, with eight players at even par or better.

After the morning rounds, Woo led the field by one stroke after firing 3-under par 35-34 -69. Woo, who just played his junior season at the University of Oregon, made four birdies and had one bogey during his opening round.

A slew of potential qualifiers followed Woo; among those players were Jordan Lu of Vancouver, B.C. and Austin Spicer of Gresham, Ore. who were one stroke behind at 2-under par 70. Justin Kadin of Corvallis, Ore, Matt Marrese of Bellevue, Wash., Delmar Strader of Longview, Wash. and Gerrit Chambers of Brush Prairie, Wash. all shot 1- under par 71 making them two behind Woo after the morning round.

The start of the second round began and the temperature was rising. Lu came out in the afternoon with a great start, as he had an amazing shot on hole 11 where he eagled from about 165 yards out. He also had birdies on 10, 12, 14 and 18 and finished the first nine at 5-under par and was 7-under overall. Woo was consistent at 2-under through the first nine holes and 5-under overall, just two shots back.

Woo then finished strong on the final nine holes by making four birdies and finishing his last nine at 4-under par and finishing the 36-hole round at 9-under par 69-66-135 to win the medalist honor. Lu played very solid on the last nine holes but had a costly bogey on the 5th hole that really set him back. His 36-hole total was 6-under par 70-68-138 and was the 1st alternate. Chambers also had a great start to the second round where he fired a 3-under on the first nine but came up short of Woo, finishing at 5-under 71-68-139 and got the second alternate spot.

As the regional representative of the United States Golf Association, it is one of two regional qualifiers conducted for this national championship by the OGA.  Woo will now join three players who have yet to be decided at the next qualifier on Monday, July 14 at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Ore.

The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association (USGA), 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
