Arey and Riede Lead After Day One at the 17th Oregon Public Links Championship

Hogan Arey of Corvallis, Ore. leads the Oregon Public Links Championship on the 6,881-yard par 72 Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore., the same golf course he grew up on. Low scores were the order of the day as there were 20 players at even par or better. The same is true in the Women’s Division, as Kayla Riede of Olivehurst, Calif. leads past Oregon Amateur Champion Kate Harper by one stroke.

Arey, whose dad is the Head Golf Professional of Trysting Tree, leads the field by one stroke after firing a 6-under par 32-34-66. Sean Arey, who is the head PGA Professional, clearly has had his son spend a lot of time at the golf course, and not just playing golf either, which was evident when after his round he was put to work, taking water out to refill the coolers on the golf course. His round was a what-could-have-been as a shot on hole number nine left him with a four foot birdie that he just lipped out. However, even with par on that hole he still finished the front nine at 4-under par. His back nine was the same way, a couple of lipped out putts for what looked like an easy 6-under par round to lead the field by one stroke over some very accomplished players.

In the hunt behind Arey are Kevin Geniza, of Corvallis, Ore. and Connor Barr of Beaverton, Ore. Both shot 5-under par 67. Trysting Tree is the home course for the Oregon State Beavers golf team and for OSU golfer Kevin Murphy of Rogue River, Ore., he took advantage, firing a 3-under par 69. Also in the hunt are two University of Oregon golfers, Zach Foushee of West Linn, Ore. and Nigel Lett of Beaverton, Ore.

In the Women’s Division it is Riede, a University of Tulsa golfer who leads the field by one stroke over Kate Harper of Portland, Ore. Both players were the only two players under par. Riede finished her round with a 4-under par 33-35-68. Riede and Harper will play in the final women’s group with Sarah Archuleta of West Linn who fired a 1-over par 73.

In the Men’s Open Division, Andy Rodby of Redmond, Ore. and Christopher Witt of Brookings, Ore. lead after both shot 3-over par 75.

Tomorrow’s final round will begin at 7:30 AM with the leaders playing in the last group. To be eligible to play in the Oregon Public Links Championship players must be a member of a club that is open to the general public.
