62nd Oregon Stroke Play Championship Kicks Off Friday at Juniper Golf Club

Redmond, Ore. – The 62nd edition of the Oregon Stroke Play Championship begins Friday, August 1st at Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, Ore.

Playing as a 54-hole championship, the top half of the field, including ties, will make the cut after the second day of play on Saturday, August 2nd. The Championship will conclude on Sunday, August 3rd. Three divisions will be crowning champions: The Open Division, Master-40 Division and Senior Division.

A full field of 158 of the top men’s amateur players from around Oregon and Southwest Washington will attempt to claim the Championship title in 2014. Zach Foushee (West Linn, Ore.) is back to defend his 2013 Oregon Stroke Play Championship win. The University of Oregon golfer has had a successful summer, earning medalist honors at two-day qualifying at the 105th Oregon Amateur Championship, finishing fourth at the 2014 Oregon Public Links Championship, and also competing in last week’s 48th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship.

Two other Oregon Ducks are also in the field, Sulman Raza (Eugene, Ore.) and Nigel Lett (Beaverton, Ore.). Raza made it to the quarterfinals of the 2014 Oregon Amateur Championship and also participated in the 48th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship, which took place last week in Flagstaff, Ariz. Lett made it to match play in this year’s Oregon Amateur, also tying for 10th place in this year’s Oregon Public Links Championship.

Two of the three representatives from Team Oregon in the 2014 Morse Cup will be competing this weekend, Kevin Murphy (Rogue River, Ore.) and Justin Kadin (Corvallis, Ore.). Murphy earned medalist honors at U.S. Open local qualifying at Royal Oaks Country Club earlier this year, also making it to the round of 16 in the Oregon Amateur Championship. Kadin was tied for second in Oregon Amateur Stroke Play Qualifying, making it to the round of 32 in match play.

Past Oregon Stroke Play champions in the field include the 2012 champion Michael Johansen (Vancouver, Wash.), Pat O’Donnell (Happy Valley, Ore.), who won the Senior Stroke Play Championship from 2007-10, and Denny Taylor (Gladstone, Ore.), the 2002 Senior Champion. Last year’s Senior Champion, Randy Mahar (Portland, Ore.) is back to defend his title, along with the 2013 Master-40 champion, Charlie Rice (Bend, Ore.).

The strong field also includes the 2013 Oregon Public Links champion, Alistair Docherty (Vancouver, Wash.); the 2014 OGA Tournament of Champions winner, Scott Hval (Portland, Ore.), and 2014 Oregon Amateur Championship runner-up Austin Landis (Gladstone, Ore.). Matt Hartley (Vancouver, Wash.), the 2013 PNGA Mid-Amateur champion is also included in the field. Hartley made it to the quarterfinals of the 2014 Oregon Amateur earlier this summer.

Juniper Golf Club, located in Redmond, Ore. has hosted numerous USGA Qualifiers and Oregon Junior Golf events throughout the years. The course will play at 7,186 yards with a course rating and slope of 73.8/133 for the Open and Master-40 Divisions, and 6,803 yards with a course rating and slope of 72.1/129 for the Senior Division.
