Conner Kumpula Leads After First Day of 62nd Oregon Stroke Play Championship
Conner Kumpula (Albany, Ore.) shot a 4-under par 68 on Friday to take a two-shot lead at the 62nd Oregon Stroke Play Championship, held at Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, Ore.
Kumpula, who plays collegiate golf at Oregon State University, used a 4-under par 32 on the back nine to create some separation between himself and the rest of the impressive field after one day of the Championship. Birdies on holes 13, 15, 17 and 18 capped off an excellent end to Kumpula’s round.
Three players sit in second place in the Open Division at 2-under par: Ray Richards (Tualatin, Ore.), Austin Landis (Gladstone, Ore.) and Hayden Christensen (Brush Prairie, Wash.). Taylor Schmidt (Boise, Idaho), Kevin Murphy (Rogue River, Ore.), Sulman Raza (Eugene, Ore.) and defending champion Zach Foushee (West Linn, Ore.) are all three back of Kumpula at 1-under par.
In the Senior Division, Don Orrell (Bend, Ore.) shot 33 on the back nine (his first nine) and remained 3-under par throughout his round, as he leads after a first-round 69. Byron Patton (Tigard, Ore.), Michael Kloenne (West Linn, Ore.) and Chris Hudson (Portland, Ore.) are three shots back and tied for second at even-par.
Cody Pinkston (Eugene, Ore.) leads the Master-40 Division after a 1-under par 71 on Friday. Scott Carver (Portland, Ore.) is one shot back after a first-round 72 and Jeff Ward (Bend, Ore.) and Scott Hval (Portland, Ore.) are two shots back at 1-over par (73).
The Championship continues on Saturday at Juniper Golf Club. The field will be cut in half after tomorrow’s round with the top half of the field, plus ties, in each division advancing to Sunday’s final round.
