Aram Choi Leads by Three, Looks to Repeat at 24th Oregon Women's Stroke Play Championship; Maletis, Bristol Tied for Lead at 9th Oregon Super Senior Championship

Woodburn, Ore. – Defending Champion Aram Choi (Portland, Ore.) fired an opening round four-under par 68 to lead the field and looks to repeat at the 24th Oregon Women’s Stroke Play Championship heading into tomorrow’s final round.

Choi leads by three strokes over Morgan Thompson (Tualatin, Ore.), while three-time Oregon Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion Brie Stone (Veneta, Ore.) and 17th Oregon Women’s Public Links Champion Kayla Riede (Olivehurst, Calif.) lurk just four strokes back after matching rounds of even-par 72. 105th Oregon Women’s Amateur and 84th Oregon Junior Amateur Champion Gigi Stoll (Beaverton, Ore.) sits tied for fifth at one-over par.

In the Senior Division, 2012 Senior Oregon Women’s Amateur Champion Debbie Friede (Washougal, Wash.) sits two strokes ahead of last year’s Senior Women’s Oregon Stroke Play Champion Anita Wicks (Roseburg, Ore.) and storied OGA competitor Charisse Spada (Portland, Ore) who both fired rounds of three-over par.

Tomorrow’s final round begins tomorrow with players going off both the 1st & 10th tees at 12:30 pm.

The 24th Oregon Women’s Stroke Play Championship and the 9th Oregon Super Senior Championships are being held concurrently on the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore. – the home of amateur golf in Oregon.

Chris Maletis (Portland, Ore.) and Bill Bristol (Vancouver, Wash.) are atop the leaderboard after day one at the 9th Oregon Super Senior Championship, both firing rounds of two-under par 70. Earlier this year, Maletis won the 50th PNGA Super Senior Championship.

Jay Robinson (Tigard, Ore.) is one shot back at one-under par. Carey Watson (Sunriver, Ore.) and Tom Carlsen (Bend, Ore.) are just two strokes back after both shooting 72 (E) on Tuesday.

Cindy Anderson (Eugene, Ore.) leads the Women’s Super Senior Championship after a first-day round of 80. Rusty Beckel (Oak Grove, Ore.) is five shots back after shooting 85 on Tuesday.

In the Super Senior Championship, there are three men’s divisions (Nicklaus, Palmer, Nelson) and two women’s divisions (Zaharius, Berg), all based on age.

Maletis leads the Nicklaus Division (ages 65-68) by one shot over Robinson. In the Palmer Division (ages 69-71), Bristol’s two-under par round saw him jump out to a seven-shot lead over Travis Gamble (Gig Harbor, Wash.), who shot 77 (+5) on Tuesday. Del Jordan (Tigard, Ore.) leads the Nelson Division (ages 72-78) after the first day, shooting 74 (+2). Defending Oregon Super Senior Champion Tom Liljeholm (Prineville, Ore.) is in second place, three strokes back.

Beckel leads the Zaharius Division (ages 60-65) by two shots over Kathleen Wallace (Molalla, Ore.). In the Berg Division (ages 66-74), Anderson has an eight-shot lead over Susan Palmer (Eugene, Ore.).
