Molalla, Ore. – Loree McKay (Hillsboro, Ore.) came back from two down with two holes to play to defeat Anita Wicks (Roseburg, Ore.) after 19 holes to win the Women’s Championship at the 31st Oregon Senior Amateur Championship at Arrowhead Golf Club in Molalla, Ore. In the Men’s Championship, three-time defending champion Scott Hval (Portland, Ore.) will attempt to win an unprecedented fourth-straight title against 2008 and 2010 champion Pat O’Donnell (Happy Valley, Ore.).
McKay’s win marked her third Oregon Women’s Senior Championship title (2007, 2011). After falling behind by three after 14 holes, and facing dormie after the 16th hole at 2-down with two holes to play, she fought back to force extra holes, before a par on the 19th hole sealed the victory.
“Being two down with two to play, I was just trying to hang in there,” said McKay. “I gave myself a couple of birdie chances, and all I did was just kind of hang in there. That’s all I was thinking, if you hang around long enough you never know.”
In the Men’s Championship, a star-studded final will include Hval and O’Donnell, who have combined to win five of the last six Oregon Senior Amateur Championships. Hval defeated Denny Taylor (Gladstone, Ore.) 5 & 4 in the quarterfinals in the morning, and then defeated Ron Hop (Dayton, Ore.) in the afternoon’s semifinals 3 & 2.
O’Donnell, playing at his home course, beat John Qualman (Eugene, Ore.) 6 & 5 in the quarterfinals before defeating Tom Prevost (McMinnville, Ore.) 5 & 3 in the semifinals. Tomorrow’s Men’s Championship match will begin at 8:45 AM, following finals matches for the Men’s first, second and third flights.
