ROYAL OAKS CC WINS 87TH OGA MEN’S TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP; HERON LAKES’ ALFRED LAURIE EARNS INDIVIDUAL TITLE
Medford, Ore. – The team from Royal Oaks Country Club ran away from the field on Sunday, winning the 87th OGA Men’s Team Championship held at Centennial Golf Club in Medford, Ore. Heron Lakes Golf Club’s (Team #1) Alfred Laurie won medalist honors, finishing with a two-day total of 137, 7-under par.
Royal Oaks’ team (Gregg Guernsey, Jake O’Neal, Tim O’Neal, Jonathan Romano) finished at 3-over par for the two days (220-215 – 435). The squad’s Sunday score of 215 (-1) was the low score of the tournament for one day, as they came back from a two-shot deficit after Saturday’s first round. Romano finished as low-scorer for Royal Oaks at 72-69 – 141 (-3), while Jake O’Neal was also under par at 73-70 – 143 (-1).
Royal Oaks’ win is its second in three years. The team also won in 2012 at Pronghorn Golf Club.
Arrowhead Golf Club (Austin Landis, Pat O’Donnell, Denny Taylor, Scott Taylor) and Rock Creek Country Club (Nate Blauer, George
L. Carlson, John Delong, Steve Smith) tied for second in the team competition, both squads finishing at 5-over par for the tournament and two shots back of Royal Oaks. Columbia Edgewater Country Club (Scott Hval, Michael Kloenne, Randy Mahar, Bill Winter), Heron Lakes Golf Club #1 (Chris Hudson, Alfred Laurie, Matt Newcombe, Mike Volm) and Portland Golf Club (Bob Harrington, Brian Little, Chris J. Shepard, Tom Zupan) all tied for fourth place at 9-over par for the tournament.
Laurie won the individual title with scores of 67-70 – 137 (-7). Laurie’s championship included one eagle, eight birdies and just three bogeys. Jimmy White, representing the home club at Centennial GC, finished in second place at 5-under par, 68-71 – 139. Jake Wagner (Riverside Golf & Country Club) was third at 4-under par, 71-69 – 140. Ryan Fery (Rose City Golf Club), Pat O’Donnell (Arrowhead Golf Club) and Romano tied for fourth, finishing at 3-under par.
Centennial Golf Club in Medford, Ore. played to a tournament distance of 6,921 yards. The course opened to rave reviews on May 20, 2006 and has been the talk of the town since. The facility boasts 18 holes of spectacular golf designed by two time PGA Tour winner and 1977 US Amateur Champion, John Fought.
