Multiple Playoffs Highlight the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge
Corvallis, OR – It’s playoff season! Eleven of our juniors were not satisfied with the regular 36-hole tournament, forcing five separate playoffs to decide the champions of the Peter Jacobsen Junior Challenge at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, OR.
The first playoff of the day came in the PeeWee Boys 10-11 Division. Graham Moody (Vancouver, WA) and Collin Hodgkinson (Beaverton, OR) went three playoff-holes to determine the winner. The pair had similar putts of about eight feet on the third hole. Hodgkinson’s missed by just inches. Moody took the victory as his ball found the center of the cup. The boys shook hands with a smile, both proud of how well they competed.
The rest of the PeeWee Divisions went on without playoffs. The PeeWee 10-11 Girls Division was led by Riley Hammericksen (Medford, OR) at 9-over-par, while Jade Gruher (Camas, WA) took second and Zoe Newell (West Linn, OR) took third. Douglas Bailey (Durham, OR) won the PeeWee 8-9 Boys Division after improving on his first round of 12-over-par. Spencer Moody (Vancouver, WA) took a close second place. The PeeWee 8-9 Girls Division were led by Natalie Yen (West Linn, OR), closely followed by Jacinda Lee (Camas, WA) and Lucy Newell (West Linn, OR).
The next playoff came from the Boys Open 14-17 Division. Bryce Wortman (Klamath Falls,OR) and Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, WA) came into the clubhouse after firing a pair of 7-under-par rounds for the tournament. Tibbits chipped in on his last hole to force the playoff, which lasted a full five holes, neither player willing to give up a stroke, until Tibbits birdied hole #5 to break the chain of pars and claim the champion spot. Kevin Geniza (Corvallis, OR), Brian Humphreys (Washougal, WA), and Ryan Feyrer (Lacey, WA) all tied for third at 3-under-par.
It only took one hole for Feyrer to win a playoff for the third available spot in the IMG Boys 15-17 Qualifier. Feyrer birdied the first hole to defeat Geniza and Humphreys.
Ellie Slama (Salem OR) won her second OJG Major in a row in the Girls Open 12-17 Division. Slama won by 3 strokes with her score of 3-under-par. Daniele Giles (Central Point, OR) followed closely in 2nd.
The Junior Boys 16-17 Division was led by Aaron Richardson (Gearhart, OR) at 7-over-par. Richardson was followed by Rhett Pedersen (Bend, OR).
The fourth playoff of the day came from the Girls 15-17 Division. Mary Anderson (Lake Oswego, OR) defeated Katie Bogert (Tigard, OR) after two playoff holes.
The Boys 14-15 Division was led by Samuel Pyon (Happy Valley, OR), also his second OJG Major victory in a row. Joseph Brunden (Eugene, OR) finished in 2nd place.
The Intermediate Boys 12-13 Division was led by Isaac Buerger (Redmond, OR) with a 7-under-par total. Scotty Kennon (Bandon, OR) scored a combined 3-under-par total to take 2nd place.
Jessica Ponce (Portland, OR) defeated Heejung Kang in the final playoff of the day to win the Intermediate Girls 12-14 Division.
