Upsets Begin at 106th Oregon Amateur Championship, Rounds of 32 & 16 Set For Men; Round of 16 For Women For Thursday
Aloha, Ore. – During another day of idyllic conditions for play at The Reserve Vineyard & Golf, 64 Men and 32 Women started their journeys where two will eventually earn the title of the state’s best amateur.
Defending Champion Thomas Lim (Moorpark, Calif.) barely squeezed out a victory, finishing on the 17th green to win 3 & 1, while number two seed Arther Kim (Tigard, Ore.), lost to Warner Pacific’s John-Michael Pilot when Pilot made birdie on the first extra hole.
3rd seed Conner Kumpula (Albany, Ore.) defeated Greg Chianello (Portland, Ore.) 1 up.
5th seed Jesse Heinly (Bend, Ore.), who was a member of this year’s PNGA Cup Team and competed in last year’s US Amateur, was upset in his first match by former Oregon Tournament of Champions Winner and St. Martin’s player Ryan Pickthorn (Damascus, Ore.), who was seeded 60th. Dominant performances of the day included UO’s Sulman Raza’s 6 & 5 win, Scott Hval’s 7 & 6 win, Trevor Warner’s 5 & 3 win, Cole Graham’s 6 & 4 win, Rudi Pino’s 5 & 4 win and Nicholas Huff’s 5 & 3 win.
The men’s competition will continue Thursday with the Round of 32 in the morning with the Round of 16 in the afternoon.
In the women’s competition, medalist Madison Odiorne (Bend, Ore.) defeated Kat Gerrish (Portland, Ore.) 3 & 2, while defending champion Gigi Stoll (Beaverton, Ore.) started match play with a statement 9 & 8 win over Janelle Decker (Tualatin, Ore.) as did OSU’s Hannah Swanson (Forest Grove, Ore.) who defeated Corinne Phinney (Sandy, Ore.) 8 & 6.
25th seed Kristin Elich (West Linn, Ore.) took the only lead of her match when she made par on her second extra hole to defeat 8th seed Deanna Salvatori (Salem, Ore.)
