Pickerell Family Top the Leaderboard at 65th OGA Parent-Child Chapman
SALEM, ORE. - Golf tends to run in the family. A good example of this - The Pickerell family. They owned this year's edition of the OGA Parent-Child Chapman.Ashlee Pickerell (Wilsonville, Ore.) and her father, Paul, took home the overall Gross Division title at the 65th OGA Parent-Child Chapman on Sunday, shooting an impressive 10-under par 62 at Salem Golf Club in Salem, Ore. Sunday's victory came after Ashlee and her mother, Allyson, tied for the Net Division title on Saturday with Palmer and Branden Thompson (Newberg, Ore.), as both teams shot a round of 14-under par 58.
The father-daughter duo started their round on Sunday hot, birdieing three of the first five holes. They finished the front nine at 3-under par, but the best was yet to come. The two birdied the first five holes on the back nine, adding two birdies on the last two holes, combining to shoot an outstanding 29 (-7) on the back side. With their front nine 33, the 62 would be four shots clear of second place.
Coming into Sunday's round, Brandon and Richard Cardwell (Portland, Ore.) led the Gross Division after shooting a 4-under par 68 on Saturday. But more low scores were to be had on the second-straight scorching hot day at Salem GC, as Scott and Tyson Campbell (Redmond/Salem, Ore.) came in second place with a 6-under par 66.

The mother-daughter duo of Ashlee and Allyson were consistently great on Saturday, totaling 12 net birdies in their round, not including a net eagle on the par-4 11th hole. Not to be outdone, the Thompson team tallied 11 net birdies and two net eagles, including a net "1" on the par-3 6th hole.
Salem Golf Club, an Ercel Kay designed golf course, was played at 5,990 yards for the men, and 5,244 yards for women and juniors, respectively, and was played in a modified Chapman format. In normal Chapman format, partners both drive from each tee, and then each plays a second shot with the other's ball. After the second shots, a choice is made regarding the ball with which the hole will be completed, alternate shots being continued until the ball is holed. For this tournament, play was modified for Par-3's, with partners deciding on the better ball after each tee shot, rather than after the second shots.
Originally established in 1928 as the Father-Son Championship, the event has become one of the more popular events administered by the OGA, with over 100 clubs represented by teams comprised of sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers.
Teams can choose to play on either Saturday or Sunday, and can form a different team for the other day. The winners are determined by the best Gross and Net score over the two day period.
