Mertens Leads 25th Oregon Women's Stroke Play, Spicher Leads Super Senior

Portland, Oregon – Sunny skies, hard fairways, and a tough tree-lined Rock Creek Country Club provided plenty of challenge for the 127 players in the first round today at the Oregon Women’s Stroke Play Championship and Oregon Super Senior Championship.  The two tournaments, which are separate events hosted by Rock Creek Country, are held concurently to crown Women’s and Super Senior Stroke Play State Champions.

The morning started with the Women’s Stroke Play Championship teeing off to get the competitions underway. In the Women’s Open Division, former Beaverton standout and current Idaho State University player Kylie Martens (Beaverton, Ore.) took the day one lead after 3 birdies propelled her to a round of two-over par 74, good enough for a 2-shot lead over Tigard High School Sophomore-to-be Victoria Gailey.  Jenny Krause, a Senior-to-be at Sheldon High School in Eugene, Ore. sits just two shots back after firing a 4-over 76.

In the Senior Women’s Division, defending champion Anita Wicks (Roseburg, Ore.) put herself in a good position to repeat after a first-round four-over par 76.  Loree Mckay (Hillsboro, Ore.) and Lelani Norman (Eugene, Ore.) each posted matching 78’s and will play in the final group with Wicks tomorrow.

In the Men’s Super-Senior Championship, Sam Spicher (Beaverton, Ore.) claimed the low round of the day firing a two-under par 70.  Spicher currently holds a small lead over defending champion Chris Maletis (Portland, Ore.) who shot an even-par round of 72 and Dick Iverson (Lake Oswego, Ore.) who shot a 73.

In the Women’s Super-Senior Championship, Rusty Beckel (Oak Grove, Ore.) fired consistent 9-hole scores of 38 to catapult her into the day one lead with a four-over par 76.  Susan Badders of Beaverton, Ore. sits 8 shots back after shooting an 84 and Susan Palmer is alone in third after a 87.
