Arizona, Northern California Tied for Lead After First Day of Hogan Cup; Nevada's Christian James Leads Individually
PORTLAND, ORE. – The team from Arizona and defending champion Northern California are tied atop the leaderboard after day one of the 47th Eddie Hogan Cup Team Matches, while Christian James of Team Nevada leads individually heading into the second and final day at Riverside Golf & Country Club in Portland, Ore.
The team leaders sit at 8-over par (224) after day one of the Hogan Cup. The course played extremely tough for most players, with only one individual (James) shooting under par. However, the gap is extremely narrow between the first and last place teams – Team Oregon #2 sits in 12th place, but only 10 shots back from the leaders.
Behind Arizona and Northern California are three teams just a shot back and at 9-over par: Hawaii, Nevada and Southern California.
James, from Las Vegas, Nevada, has finished in the top three of the Nevada State High School Tournament two of the last three years (2013, 2015).
“[The] keys for today were keeping it in play off the tee,” said James. “Good putting helped me out and a big thing for me was keeping my emotions in check.”
“The wind got frustrating at times but I kept positive and made sure I played smart enough not to put up a big number.”
His round of 1-under par 71 is one shot better than Andy Kim (Langley, B.C.) and Kengo Aoshima (Honolulu, Hawaii). Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, Wash.) is the low player for Team Oregon #1, sitting in a tie for 12th place after a first round 75 (+3), while Kevin Geniza (Corvallis, Ore.) led the way for Team Oregon #2 and is just two shots back of James after a 73 (+1) on Saturday.
Tee times begin on Sunday at 9:55 AM off of tee #1, with the final group teeing off at 12:10 PM.
