Back to Basics - Handicapping 101: End of Season Tips

Though we’ve got one more month to go before the final day of the regular season – and hopefully more nice golf weather in store – there are a few things that you need to know for the weeks ahead. The last day to post a score within the OGA region (Oregon and Southwest Washington) is November 30th.

  • Active vs. Inactive Season – Each state and regional golf association sets their season date parameters, mainly based on how weather patterns affect the condition of golf courses. In the OGA region, we’ve determined that the reasonable months for an inactive season in which local scores are not accepted for handicap purposes is December through February.
  • When a round is played at a course currently in an inactive season, those scores are not to be posted to a player’s Handicap Index. Even if the weather and course conditions happen to be stellar that day, the score cannot be entered into a scoring record.
  • It’s where you are playing that determines whether the score can be posted – not where you are from.

What about the ‘daylight effect’ this time of year?  If you set out to play 18 holes but impending darkness spoils the fun, keep these rules of thumb in mind for posting your score:

  • If you play 1- 6 holes: no score to post
  • If you play 7-12 holes: post a nine-hole score
  • If you play 13-18 holes: post an 18-hole score

For lucky Snowbirds playing in warmer, year-round golf climates – Please post your rounds right after you play.  No need to save your scorecards and post them when you get home. Just use your handy GHIN Mobile App and search the course from the National Course Rating Database to get the rounds in accurately. Your Handicap Index is updated throughout the year on the 1st and 15th of the month, even if your home club is “inactive”.
