Spencer Tibbits, Ellie Slama Medal in Top Divisions at Oregon Junior Amateur

CANBY, ORE. – Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, Wash.) medaled in the Junior Boys Division, and defending champion Ellie Slama (Salem, Ore.) medaled in the Girls Division to highlight the first day of the 86th Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Amateur Championship, held at Willamette Valley Country Club in Canby, Ore.

All 18-hole divisions will begin match play tomorrow, Tuesday, June 28th. The Pee Wee Divisions for both Boys and Girls will play 9 holes of stroke play qualifying tomorrow on the back nine at Willamette Valley, starting at 7:00 AM, and will start match play on Wednesday.

In one of the divisions that will determine this year’s Oregon Junior Amateur Champion, the Junior Boys Division, Tibbits led stroke play qualifying by shooting a 3-under par 69 on Monday. His round mixed in four birdies, three bogies and an eagle on the par-5 14th hole which highlighted his low round. Craig Ronne (Klamath Falls, Ore.) was the only other player in the division to finish under par, shooting a 1-under par 71. Jon Holzgang (Tigard, Ore.) finished in third at even-par (72), and Jack Rodewald (Portland, Ore.) and Andrew Eyre (Salem, Ore.) both shot 73 (+1).

The top 32 scores in the Junior Boys Division moved on to the Championship Flight. The remaining players were separated accordingly into the second and fourth flights.

In the Girls Division, last year’s champion, Slama, fired a 2-under par 70 to lead the way and earn medalist honors. Slama was extremely consistent, only accumulating one bogey in her round. Victoria Gailey (Tigard, Ore.) finished in second place during stroke play qualifying, firing a 73 (+1). Haley Greb (Pendleton, Ore.) earned third place, shooting a 2-over par 74, and Madalyn Ardueser (Eugene, Ore.) is in fourth after a 77 (+5) during qualifying.

The top 16 scores in the Girls Division advanced to the Championship Flight, with the remaining players in the division put into their respective flights.

Jackson Kennon (Bandon, Ore.) earned medalist honors in the Boys Division, after a long playoff over Samuel Pyon (Happy Valley, Ore.). Both players finished even-par after 18 holes, and it took seven playoff holes for Jackson to emerge as the medalist. Elliot Goulet (Milwaukie, Ore.) and Nate Stember (Portland, Ore.) tied for third, shooting 74 (+2).

Olivia Venderby (West Linn, Ore.) shot an 82 (+10) to lead the way in the Intermediate Girls Division. Yvonne Vinceri (Portland, Ore.) finished just one shot behind at +11 (83), and Mary Scott Wolfe (Beaverton, Ore.) earned third place after shooting 84 (+12).

In the Intermediate Boys Division, Scotty Kennon (Bandon, Ore.) tied for low-round of the day, shooting 69 (-3). He won qualifying by four shots over Brody Marconi (Portland, Ore.), who shot a 73 (+1). Mateo Fuenmayor (Beaverton, Ore.) finished six shots back at +3 (75).
