Familiar Faces Lead After First Day of Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship
WOODBURN, ORE. - Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, Wash.) and Ellie Slama (Salem, Ore.) lead their respective divisions after the first
round of the 19th Oregon Junior Stroke Play Championship, held July 5-7 at the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, Ore.
The Oregon Junior Stroke Play includes a field of 62 boys and 28 girls between the ages of 12 and 17. The field in each division will be cut in half after tomorrow’s round, with those that make the cut advancing to Thursday’s final round.
Leading the Boys Division is Spencer Tibbits, last week’s Oregon Junior Amateur champion and last year's champion in this event. Despite a double bogey on the par-5 4th hole, Tibbits managed to shoot even par on the front nine, then started his back nine birdie-eagle, finishing with a 3-under par 33 on the back to finish with a first-round 69 (-3).
In second is Craig Ronne (Klamath Falls, Ore.), who birdied two of his last three holes to finish with a 2-under par 70. Mateo Fuenmayor (Beaverton, Ore.), the Intermediate Boys Division champion in last week’s Junior Amateur, shot 71 (-1), and three players are tied for fourth at even-par: Richie Mikesell (Albany, Ore.), Cameron Nicklos (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Nicholas Timm (Portland, Ore.).
In the Girls Division, defending champion Ellie Slama leads by four shots after the first day of competition after shooting a 2-under
par 70. Slama put together six birdies on her round, and played the par-4s at 1-under par, a contributing factor to her success on Tuesday. Last week, Slama lost in the championship match at the Oregon Junior Amateur Championship.
In second place is Victoria Gailey (Tigard, Ore.) and Madalyn Ardueser (Eugene, Ore.), who both shot a round of 2-over par 74. Ashley Zhu (Salem, Ore.) is in fourth place after a first round 75 (+3), and Katie Williams (West Linn, Ore.) is in fifth, firing a 5-over par 77.
Last week’s Oregon Junior Amateur champion in the Girls Division, Haley Greb (Pendleton, Ore.), struggled on Tuesday, firing an 84 (+12). She currently sits outside the cut line, but will have 18 holes to attempt to finish in the top half of the field.
