Champions crowned at the Central Willamette Junior
WOODBURN - MOLALLA, ORE.-The major season is winding down. Believe it or not there are only four majors to go before the Tournament of Major Champions at The Oregon Golf Club. This weekend eleven more invitations were handed out to the tournament that wraps up the season. 195 juniors were in the field for the Central Willamette Junior, played at the OGA Golf Course (Woodburn, Ore.) on Monday (July 11) and Arrowhead Golf Course (Molalla, Ore.) on Tuesday (July 12).
The day started off both tees and the Boys Open division was the first to begin their round of 18. The tournament was up for grabs at this point with 4 players having shot 70 or below on the first day. The winner, Jackson Kennon shot a 70-74 for a total of 144 while the next three players turned in total scores of 145; this group included John Pollock who did have a hole-in-one on Monday at the OGA golf course. The ties were settled and second went to Austin Carnese while third went to John Pollock.
The Girls Open division was won with rounds of 80 and 74 for a total of 154 by Madalyn Ardueser. This division was no less competitive than the rest as the next four spots included ties at 157 and 158. Ultimately, second place went to May Wang (79-78 total 157) and third place went to Iliana Telles (81-76 total 157). These ties were broken in the last six holes of the final day.
The Junior Boys division was won by Jacob Larson with rounds of 76 and 74 for a total of 150. The Junior Boys division continued the trend of new faces with Jermain Jordan taking second and Trent Johnson coming in third.
The Girls division was won by Katie Goodwin with rounds of 83 and 84 for a total of 167. Second was taken by one stroke over third as Melia Nordberg with a score of 175 followed closely by the third place Nicole Posner with a score of 176 and a scorecard playoff win.
The Boys division was nothing short of exciting as the top three players were separated by one stroke as the winner, Johnny Ward, turned in a total of 155 while Danny Hext (2nd) and Jacob Tarkany (3rd) turned in totals of 156. Their tie was settled by a scorecard playoff.
The low rounds of the tournament each day were shot by Mateo Fuenmayor of the Intermediate Boys division. He won his division with rounds of 69 and 68 for a total of 137. Second in the Intermediate Boys division was Graham Moody who fired back-to-back 72s finishing with a total of one over for the tournament. There was a tie between Brandon Eyre and Ethan Tseng for third with finishing scores of 148. Eyre would eventually win in a scorecard playoff.
The Intermediate Girls division was won in the final group of the day. Mary Scott Wolfe, Franca Polla, and Sophie Dalfonsi started the day with only 4 strokes separating each of them. Mary turned in a final round score of 75, the lowest in the division for the whole tournament, to win. Franca and Sophie were in a battle for the second and third positions. Franca would go on to shoot a final round 81 (total 162) matching her first day and taking second. Sophie posted a strong 82 (total 167) for third place.
The PeeWee boys 8-9 division was won with three great final rounds. The winner Grady Millar posted a 41 while Alex Tseng (2nd) and Lucas Vanderlip (3rd) each posted 40. The PeeWee boys 10-11 was as competitive as always with the winner Tye Dechativong posting a total of 82 and the next three boys tied at 83. The scorecard playoffs were won by Elliot Lee and Eli Huntington taking second and third respectively.
The PeeWee girls 8-9 division was won by Natalie Yen with a strong final round of 43. Natalie was followed by Erika Kobayashi in second and Jasmine Chen in third. The PeeWee girls 10-11 division was a very competitive division won by Sofia Fuenmayor with rounds of 46 and 41 for a total of 87. Second and third were decided with a scorecard playoff with totals of 91. The second place winner was Jade Gruher and third went to Emily Song.
