Baines’ Team Wins Gross Title at 66th OGA Parent-Child; Welty Squad Earns Net Title

SALEM, ORE. - The two-man team of Scott and Nicklaus Baines (Portland, Ore.) won the Gross Title, while the team of Will and Cody Welty (Boring, Ore.) earned the Net Title at the 66th OGA Parent-Child Chapman, held this weekend, July 23-24 at Salem Golf Club in Salem, Ore.

Teams can choose to play on either Saturday or Sunday, and can form a different team for the other day. The winners are determined by the best Gross and Net score over the two day period.

The father-son duo of Scott and Nicklaus Baines played on Saturday, and while they birdied their first hole, pars on the next five saw them at only 1-under after six. However, they finished the front nine birdie-birdie-eagle to shoot 31 on the front, and at 5-under. On the back side, they bogeyed the par-4 11th, but birdies on five of the last seven holes, including the 18th, helped them shoot a 9-under par 62.

Ten years ago this year, back in 2006, the Baines’ team won the Net Title at the Parent-Child Chapman.

Finishing in a tie for second was the team of Scott and Ben Stickney (Portland, Ore.), whose 5-under par 66 was the low score on Sunday, and Richard and Brandon Cardwell (Marana, Ariz. & Tacoma, Wash.).

The Welty squad shot an impressive net score of 56 (-15) on Sunday to win the Net Title. They won by three shots over the team of Krystal Stoneking and Pamela Alldritt (Beavercreek, Ore.), who shot a net score of 59 (-12) on Sunday, and by four shots over the teams of Alan and Allison Plusquellec (Sherwood, Ore.) and Todd and Jessica Zak (Happy Valley, Ore.), who shared to net lead after both firing 11-under par 60s on Saturday.

Salem Golf Club, an Ercel Kay designed golf course, has been host of the OGA Parent-Child from 1987-1998 and from 2009-current. Similar to recent years, this year’s Parent-Child Chapman was played in a modified Chapman format. In normal Chapman format, partners both drive from each tee, and then each plays a second shot with the other's ball. After the second shots, a choice is made regarding the ball with which the hole will be completed, alternate shots being continued until the ball is holed. For this tournament, play was modified for Par-3's, with partners deciding on the better ball after each tee shot, rather than after the second shots.

Originally established in 1928 as the Father-Son Championship, the event has become one of the more popular events administered by the OGA, with over 100 clubs represented by teams comprised of sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers.
