Oregon Junior Golf Rolls Through Southern Swing
MEDFORD & KLAMATH FALLS, ORE. – A busy week with back-to-back events came to a close on Thursday, as Oregon Junior Golfers competed in the Southern Swing at this year’s Southern Oregon and Klamath Basin Junior Championships.
The 2016 Southern Oregon Junior Championship was held at Rogue Valley Country Club in Medford, Ore. on Monday and Tuesday, July 18-19. The next two days, the Klamath Basin Junior was held at Running Y Ranch and Reames Golf and Country Club in Klamath Falls, Ore.
Samuel Pyon (Happy Valley, Ore.) won the Boys Open Division at Rogue Valley CC, shooting 69-75 – 144 (E) to take home the title. Three players – Mayson Tibbs (Prineville, Ore.), Carter Lee (Tillamook, Ore.) and Brody Hval (Portland, Ore.) tied for second, finishing at +3 for the tournament.
Lee had an outstanding Klamath Basin tournament, winning the event by four shots over Cole Chrisman (Bend, Ore.). Lee fired a 5-under par 67 on the second day, totaling a 4-under par 140 for the event. Tibbs finished in third place, and Jaiveer Singh Cheema (Clackamas, Ore.) earned fourth place.
In the Girls Open Division, May Wang (Portland, Ore.) earned first place at the Southern Oregon Junior, shooting 81-78 – 159 (+15) to win by two shots over Tabetha Kang (Tigard, Ore.). Staesha Flock (Eagle Point, Ore.) earned third place and Ashley Zhu (Salem, Ore.) finished in fourth. At the Klamath Basin Junior, McKenna Vanko (Portland, Ore.) defeated Zhu in a playoff to earn the title, after both players finished at +15 for the two-day event. Flock earned third place, while Amy Wagner (Portland, Ore.) and Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.) tied for fourth.
In the Boys Division, Johnny Ward (Lake Oswego, Ore.) earned the two-event sweep, winning both tournaments by substantial margins. He won by 12 shots over Jacob Tarkany (Bend, Ore.), while Danny Hext (Portland, Ore.) earned third place. Ward won by four shots over Hext at the Klamath Basin Junior, while Tarkany got third place and Luke Simoneau (Bend, Ore.) earned fourth place.
Nicole Posner (Beaverton, Ore.) defeated Aerin Song (Beaverton, Ore.) in a playoff to win the Southern Oregon Junior in the Girls Division. Both players finished at 179 (+35) over two days. Kirsten Reed finished in third place. In Klamath Falls, Belle Vest (Grants Pass, Ore.) earned the one shot win over Clara Ganz (Portland, Ore.).
Baylee Hammericksen (Medford, Ore.) won both events in the Intermediate Girls Division, including winning by a whopping 24 shots in the Southern Oregon Junior. Her 36-hole total included rounds of 78-71 – 149 (+5), while her sister, Riley Hammericksen (Medford, Ore.) earned second place. The Hammericksen sisters also went 1-2 at the Klamath Basin Junior.
In the Intermediate Boys Division, Scotty Kennon (Bandon, Ore.) won both events, finishing with a 3-over par 36-hole total (147) at Rogue Valley and an impressive 5-under par total of 139 at Running Y and Reames. In fact, the top four stayed the exact same in the I-Boys Division for the week: Behind Kennon in first was Brandon Eyre (Salem, Eyre), Brody Marconi (Portland, Ore.) and Collin Hodgkinson (Beaverton, Ore.).
Natalie Yen (West Linn, Ore.) won both events in the Pee Wee Girls 8-9 Division, while Jade Gruher (Camas, Wash.) won both events in the Pee Wee Girls 10-11 Division. In the Pee Wee Boys 8-9 Division, Grady Millar (Vancouver, Wash.) won both events, while Elliot Lee (Tillamook, Ore.) earned the win in both tournaments in the Pee Wee Boys 10-11 Division.
The Oregon Junior Golf tour next rolls on to Central Oregon for the Central Oregon Junior, taking place this Monday and Tuesday, July 25-26 at Meadow Lakes Golf Club in Prineville, Ore. and Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, Ore.
